I Pastor at a Small Church

Lakewood Church has their grand opening this weekend. The renovation of the Compaq Center, former home of the Houston Rockets, is complete. 16,000 seats. Over 30,000 each weekend. That’s something.

In case you missed it, here’s the BusinessWeek Online interview with Joel Osteen.

What are your thoughts Tony on Osteen’s prosperity gospel?

It’s not my vision to use this site to debate theology. There are lots of other sites out there for that purpose.

All I’ll say is I believe God wants people of all income levels to know him. One huge irritant for me is when people look negatively on people of wealth, and assume they can’t be Christ-followers if they have money. We need churches to reach all kinds of people for Christ including people at all income levels.

Additionaly, I can point to a number of Christ-followers from Scriptures that were fully-devoted to their faith, experienced life “to the full,” but also faced hardships. Paul, obviously, comes to mind.

Frankly, I don’t follow Joel’s ministry closely. I’ve read that BW article and seen about 5 minutes of him on television. Probably not enough to assess one’s theology.

I’m just amazed at the aquisition and renovation of the Compaq Center. I’m looking forward to visiting it sometime when I’m down in Texas.
