My Blog Mascot

Daryl commented on my suggestion about finding a mascot for my blog. He recommended we also get a mascot for our Simply Strategic book series.

I think Daryl may be on to something. Early on in the conceptual stages of our first book, the publisher was suggesting we use a penguin on the cover of the book. Maybe the mascot for my blog should be a penguin. What do you think?

It wouldn’t be a pansy penguin like the one Linux uses. It would be a scrappy, pugnacious penguin. We need a feisty mascot that’s willing to put his neck on the line for the team–a mascot that’s willing to ruffle a few feathers if you will. I think this has potential…powerful penguin potential.

Jesse, I see that you’re a graphic designer. Maybe you should show me what a “pugnacious penguin” looks like. If I like it, I may use it on the site and give you lots of credit. Remember, though, I need a fun, feisty bird. No sissy penguins.

I saw “March of the Penguins” this weekend. (It’s amazing how much better this movie was than the one’s starring humans that I saw this summer) Not to spoil the plot, but at one point a bunch (gaggle?) of dad penguins look on while a mutant duck munches down on a baby penguin. I’m not sure pugnacious is the word for these boys, but the mutant duck looked pretty tough.

While penguins can articulate thier heads apart from their bodies, do they really have necks? I played football with some guys who didn’t have necks either for the record…

A penguin? I’m not sure how simply strategic penguins are… i mean they shove eachother into the water to check for polar bears. You should probably put a chapter in your next book about not doing that.

Why not a cockroach? Nobody ever uses the cockroach as a mascot and THOSE suckers are Pugnacious.

Tony, have you ever seen a real penguin? I just saw some recently and I can’t imagine any kind of penguin looking “scrappy” (no offense to the Pittsburgh fans). How about a TIGER? I know there is already a “Tony the Tiger” but you could add a whole new fresh spin to it! Or, you could use a Tasmanian Devil…those are some bad looking dudes.

But, I guess if you want a penguin then…well…okay. I can’t wait to see it!

Tony, maybe you should use a female penguin! haha You’d have some attitude there!

Dang. Somebody beat me to the “Tony the Tiger” suggestion. Oh well.

If you go with a penguin, just understand that you’ll be linked to Linux whether you want to be or not. The penguin-Linux connection is becoming increasingly recognized by the Internet-using public.
