Get Your Strategy On
Kevin at Church Marketing Sucks plugged my newest book, Simply Strategic Growth, not once, but twice today. Of course, the post on "attracting a crowd" has already drawn an attack. Why is it that some assume when your church has lots of people showing up, you’re probably not talking about Jesus?

Tony,
What is up with people being unable to celebrate lost people coming to church in masses? Oh yeah, lost people are not coming to ‘their’ church in masses. We have got to celebrate with each other. Frankly, there are a lot of churches I hope lost people do not show up for en masse! I know you guys are preaching the gospel so I celebrate the ‘crowd’ coming to your place. Recently a seminary professor came to our church and admitted afterwards he did not think we were preaching the gospel because so many people were attending. I seem to remember in the book, that Jesus attracted quite a crowd! We hear alot that other large churches are watering down the gospel to get their crowd so that is how we must get ours. Just because their are some bad examples does not mean that the gospel is not in effect everywhere there is a crowd! Keep up the great work!

Wow!
Yeah, lets condem getting people interested in Jesus and talk down on things like encouragement, having a plan of action, making it enjoyable for people and growth over shrinkage, because it works so well for so many failing churches?
Sounds like he should write a book on, “Why my church isn’t growing” (but most people could guess what that says without ever cracking it open!). Keep doping what your doing. I think I just learned about this sort of thing last week at John Eldredge’s Boot Camp. It is called making agreements with the enemy. If I’m correct, the enemy doesn’t want the church to gorw? I love working, serving and living side by side with you guys!

“Entertainment” in church
I am consistently dumbfounded when a blog entry or comment is made about using “entertainment” to attract people to church is immediately rebutted by someone who is afraid that churches when they use “entertainment” immediately…

“Why is it that some assume when your church has lots of people showing up, you’re probably not talking about Jesus?”
That line made me laugh out loud. It’s kind of like:
(Pulling pants up over belly button and using grumpy old man voice)
“Why are you people smiling? We’re talking about Jesus here! JESUS, do you understand? Stop being interested, get that silly smile off your face and stop inviting your unchurched friends in here! This is church, for crying out loud - and that’s a whole lot more like what you should be doing in here - crying out loud. Then again, stop that crying out loud, you’re drawing attention to yourself. Just cry quietly to yourself while we all just get through this thing and get to the all-you-can-eat steak place before the episcopalians!”*
…Dude, thanks for letting me get that off my chest..and..you kids get off my lawn!
* - Or whoever! :-D

Go get ‘em, Tony!
Great comment at CMS blog. I have visited GCC and follow your ministry through blogs, the church site and otherwise and GCC sets a strong example when it comes to reaching your community for Christ.
I defended GCC through a comment on another blog several days ago, the post was pointing to the recent USA Today article, which included a reference to GCC.
The post was against church marketing tactics, and it stirred up many differing opinions. The post and all comments were deleted yesterday, I guess the person grew tired of it!
It sure is easy to criticize those things that you don’t know.

Without your consistency, I probably won’t re-think the issue. I jotted them down here:
