It’s a little hard for me to transition to football season this year, because the Cleveland Indians are back and are in a great wild card race with the Yankees and the A’s. That aside, there’s a new sense of excitement in Notre Dame country. With Coach Weis roaming the sidelines, there’s a fresh anticipation that he might be able to bring back the glory to a football program that has been stumbling in recent years.
As we get ready for another football season, there are a couple of churches that are taking advantage of the upcoming kickoff to launch their fall ministry seasons. Daybreak in Hudsonville, Michigan is actually giving away Super Bowl tickets to encourage first-time guests. They’ve also invited AFL quarterback Aaron Garcia to speak at their service on September 11.
The other church that is using a football theme to capture people’s attention is CedarCreek Church in Perrysburg, Ohio. Their current series is called "How to Score in Your Marriage." Now that should get someone’s attention. This weekend Barb Roose, their adult education director, will be talking about "how to score with your wife." I’m sure it probably involves ordering pizza and watching football.
CedarCreek has an incredible ministry. Located in the suburbs of Toledo, Ohio, they are one of the fastest growing churches in the country. Lee Powell, the senior pastor, launched the ministry just 10 years ago, and they already have almost 6,000 people attending services each weekend. You can read more about their story here.
After the coin toss, CedarCreek has elected to kickoff with a great fall series. If I wasn’t attending a service at Granger Community Church this weekend, I’d go to CedarCreek and learn how to score with my wife and that makes them my "Cool Church of the Week."

Thanks Tony. It is amazing how many churches out there are blowing and going and yet I have never heard of them. I love the cool church of the week because it introduces me to some awesome churches.
Did you say Notre Dame? Go Noles!!!
