I know it’s not "Fun Friday," but I’ve been reviewing posts from the last few weeks and I think it’s high time we had a little levity around here. With that in mind, let me tell you about the recent date night…with my wife, Emily.

The Friday before my Catalyst trip, I took Emily out for some shopping and dinner. The date was really to celebrate my recent birthday , but my idea of fun is buying clothes for Emily. We made our way around the mall to shop primarily for jeans and shoes. That brought us to the L.S. Ayres department store. Emily and I selected a cool pair of shoes for her and headed over to the register where a nice, young girl greeted us and offered to assist.

As she began to ring up the sale, she said something that has become quite familiar through the years. Looking at Emily, she said, "You remind me of an actress." And, like many people before her, she paused for a moment, and then it clicked. "That’s it. Has anyone told you that you look just like Elisabeth Shue?" Well, the fact is my wife looks very much like Elisabeth Shue, which makes me just about the luckiest (that’s translated "blessed" for the Christians in the crowd) guy around. And, because my wife looks a lot like Elisabeth Shue, we have grown accustomed to this question.

Since we get this question so frequently, I’ve started to respond with a question of my own. I asked the nice, young girl behind the counter, "Who do I remind you of?" Again, she paused, and then she said, "Actually, you do remind me of someone." At which point, I started to get excited because I don’t look like anyone. She looked for a few more moments, began to smile and then exclaimed, "You remind me of my Uncle Dean."

I, of course, was devastated. My jaw dropped. I began to picture what I’m sure you’re picturing. And I thought if she’s Elisabeth Shue, I wonder what she has been thinking all these years being stuck with Uncle Dean.

Then the nice, young girl redeemed the moment. She explained that her Uncle Dean was asked to be a Gucci runway model…probably like these guys…only I’m hoping I’m the much more manly version. For the sake of this post, let’s just pretend that I am.

Needless to say, date night was a success. We walked away from our shoe purchasing transaction feeling very positive about our self images. For at least one night, we were Elisabeth Shue and Uncle Dean the Gucci runway model guy. We enjoyed the rest of our evening, and now we always recommend to our friends that they visit the L.S. Ayres women’s shoe department whenever they date their mates.
