Get Your Strategy On
Let’s have a little contest. I’m always on the lookout for new weekend series themes that we could potentially use at Granger. There are lots of creative churches out there. You probably either serve at or attend one of those churches. And, if you’re like me, you may also be monitoring what other churches are doing. I’m curious to know what you think are the one or two most creative weekend series themes you either used at your church or have seen at another church. Either email me or post a comment with your thoughts. If you give me enough ammunition, I’ll compile your ideas and release a "Top 10" list in the coming days. Think buzz. Think creative communication of biblical insights. Send me your thoughts on the weekend series that have caught your attention.
Tony Morgan is a pastor and the Chief Strategic Officer at NewSpring Church where he develops creative solutions for communications, technology and NewSpring Ministries--the church's ministry that equips other church leaders.

i did a series once called “math.” i talked about addition (adding more faith hope and love to your life), division (things that divide like gossip), multiplication (God’s plan for the world knowing, a “why we do what we do” kind of message) and subtraction (a couple things to get out of your life). did a recurring drama of a math class that reminded people of those high school days.
i’m working on a series now called “drowning” on the things that can drown us. topics will be things like drowning in debt and drowning in guilt.
of course these are not as cool as mylamesexlife.com! :)

Hey Tony,
I just wrapped up a six week series called, “Desperately Seeking…” I covered these six topics: acceptance, significance, intimacy, identity, contentment, and community.

We did a series called: “iTunes - Love and other Catastrophes”. We looked at the songs…
“Don’t Cha” - The P usy cat Dolls (Fantasy vs Reality).
“Sometimes you can’t make it on your own” - U2 (Dealing with conflict)
“Scar” - Missy Higgins (Relationship Hangovers).
We are a church plant targeting unchurced people. Aged between 18 and 30.

We did a message title “static” it was all about finding that quiet time with God, a time where we move the ’static’ aside and let God talk to us. We did almost the entire message in silence. TVs were scattered throughout the church all tuned to static, the large screens were static as words overlayed on top of them, some with quotes, stats, interesting blurbs, scripture…and then the pastor would speak for a bit and go to the next segment. It was amazing how loud the silence could be.
We also did a message titled ‘bumpersticker christians’ which was just fun to do…just something about having an old bumper front and center on stage.

Hey Granger has had so much success with Pure Sex - why not call the sex series next year simply Naked! :-))
We did a series at our church called Conversations with God. We approached it from what would you ask God if you could sit down with a cup of coffee (because everyone knows God loves coffee) and ask God a few questions.
We had topics in question form like “What do you think of me, God?”, “Are you real, God?”. We put some posts up on our blog http://blog.lakerobinsonchurch.org“.

Tony,
Great way to get sermon ideas without much work!
Series we’re doing/planning:
Three part series starting on easter: “24:What does it take to save the world?”, based on the show “24″. The messages will be “The right man” (Jesus), “The Right Team” (The church) and “The right Training” (learning how to know God and his word). Right after that message we’ll be offering multiple classes for people to get into, and giving away free copies of our foundational bible study book. I’ve got multiple graphic sets already made for this one.
Focus on the Family: This is a six week series starting on mothers day and and ending on fathers day where all the messages are about family. youth sunday (kids running everything on sudnay) is in this period, as well as a marriage conference, maybe a family social event.
Back to basics/school (not decided yet): We’ll be doing this series right as school kicks off here in a major college town, and it will be about getting a review of the foundations of the faith (devotional life, worship, great commission, great commandment, stewardship)
I’ve also thought of doing one called “The Gospel According to Starbucks”, “Hitting the Target” (make everything look like a target store) “Home Depot: You can do it, we can help”, something on the davinci code, etc…
Contact me for graphics or details on any series!

We’re developing a series called Firewall. A computer theme that deals with weekly topics such as:
-spam (Distractions)
-popups (Materialism)
-identity theft (Our worth to God)
-viruses (Sin Issues)
-etc..
The emphasis will be on developing a deeper relationship with God and the things that hinder that from happening.
This might also tie in with the upcoming movie of the same name.
We’re still in the early stages of development, so any feedback would be appreciated.

I asked my wife what was the best series I have every done. She said it was my series called “Toolbox”. I looked at the spiritual disciplines and related each one to a different tool in my toolbox. We did up the stage to look like a worksite. I brought out my big metal toolbox and removed a different tool each week.
For example: Silence – The plane – Remove the layers of noise from our life to hear clearly from God
Service – The hammer – Serving one another in love, not to be noticed, but as a revealer of God in us
Study – The drill – We are to be deeply saturated in scripture so we can live lives that are more like Jesus down to the last detail.
Confession – The level – Removes the sins from our lives. Confession should be specific, concrete, and particular.
Fasting – The Crowbar - Removing and/or revealing the deepest most difficult aspects of being a follower of Jesus.

Two series come to mind:
1. What’s the Difference?
In this series I talk about the difference between Christianity and other options out there. Last time I did it the first message dealt with relativism - the claim that differences are irrelevant. Other messages dealt with Islam, Eastern religions, American religions (Mormonism, JW) and I finished with the Difference between being a Christian and being an American.
2. The Truth is Better than you thought.
This series also aimed at confrontation with the world. I pick a number of positions the world argues for and show how what the bible teaches is better. One example: ‘It’s my body! I can do with it as I choose!’

How about “The Gospel in the Movies.” Sort of a spin-off (rip-off) from “The Sacred Romance” use of movies to illustrate the greatest story ever told.
The Fall — Best I can come up with right now is the descent of Gollum, from “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.” (”We wept to be so alone. …And we forgot the taste of bread… the sound of trees… the softness of the wind. We even forgot our own name. My Precious.”)
The Quest — God’s quest to rescue us. Illustrated by the waterfall scene from “The Last of the Mohicans.” (”I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far. I will find you. I will find you.”) Idea stolen from Sacred Romance.
The Rescue — The Lord rescues us from those in whom we trust. The rescue scene on the beach from “The Wind and the Lion.” Sean Connery plays a noble desert chieftain at war who kidnaps Candace Bergen and her children. Thinking she is in the hands of a an evil pirate, she arranges to escape with a group who turns out to be real pirates who intend to enslave her and her children. Sean comes to the rescue, a one man wrecking crew. (”You are a great deal of trouble Mrs. Pedecaris.”)
Enslisting in God’s Army — God is waging a guerilla war or counterattack on Satan in order to rescue the lost. He enlists us in this guerilla army. Illustrated by The Ride of the Rohirrim from “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.” (”Courage Merry. Courage for our friends.”)
Dying to Self — As Christ died for us, so we are to die for one another. The Matrix, when Agent Smith kills Neo, fulfilling the Oracle’s prophecy to Trinity that she would “fall in love with a dead man.”
Becoming who God made us to be — “Chariots of Fire.” (”I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.”)
The Victory Party — One day, the battle will be won and we will be united forever with Him and with each other. Can’t think of a real good one yet for this.

At http://www.communitychristian.org, we are getting ready to start planning a three-week series in June called “STDs (Spiritually Transmitted Diseases).” - I think it’s going to be cool - diseases like “Judgementalism” and “Loophole-ism” will be treated. I’m pretty sure most of these diseases are spread by sharing Testamints…

Can I post twice on this?
Another series I hope to teach some day: “Why Does Bad Stuff Happen to Me and What Can I do About it Anyway?”
1. John 11 — Wait and watch. “Bad stuff” happens to give God a chance to reveal, or glorify, himself (vs. 4) Jesus made the sisters wait for an answer to their prayers. In the end, they gained greater understanding of who he was and Jesus accomplished purposes greater than they could ever have imagined.
2. Be thankful, even for the “bad stuff.” Philippians 4:6 Lots of bad stuff happened to Paul, yet he was always thankful and God did things through him that were beyond imagining.
3. Reach out, even in the midst of the “bad stuff.” I Samuel 1. Eli had lots of troubles in his life, but when he reached out to help Hannah, God delivered a son to him, he worshipped the Lord for it and God did something through that son that no one could have imagined.

I know this came from Fellowship Church, but one of the best series I have seen done was called “Tank U”. It was on spiritual war fare. To see Ed Young on stage with a tank was incredible. The buzz was at an incredible point around the community.
For Horizon Community Church, I would say the series that has had the most buzz and the biggest community draw would be the one we are in now. It is called “Science Friction”. We are talking about God the biologist, God the Astronomer, and yes even God the OB,GYN. It really is hitting a cord with peeps.

I’m not sure how much “buzz” there is in ‘em, but here are some we’ve done or are doing…
1. CliffsNotes on the Bible - Our current series, hitting the whole Bible in 8 weeks (and one of those was an intro!). Attempting to get at the big picture & build biblical literacy in our seeker/stranger crowd. (The OT is a bit intimidating…)
2. Summer Blockbusters - series where each message tied into a current movie.
3. Can You Hear Me Now? - series on spiritual disciplines that help us clear the airwaves to hear God clearly. (God’s the one asking the question.)
4. Your Tough Questions - We’ve done this one a couple times, where people submit questions a couple weeks in advance & then we deal with the top ones for 3-4 weeks.
Honestly, most of our most buzzworthy series were swiped from you guys, Community Christian (Naperville), Crossroads Community (Ohio), or somewhere else! We just did Desperate Households this past fall, and it was definitely buzzworthy!
