This week I wrapped up Hebrews in my journey through the Bible. As it turns out, Hebrews wasn’t as much fun as Leviticus; however, I still have some highlights and thoughts to share:

  • "God has been addressing our ancestors in different ways for centuries." Interesting how God changed his methods of communicating with us. Makes you think the Church might benefit from changing its methods of communication from time to time as well.
  • Jesus had to "enter into every detail of human life." If that’s true, imagine him standing in line at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to renew his driver’s license. What would Jesus do?
  • God’s Word is powerful.
  • God wants us to grow up. I think we’ve confused that by assuming maturity is purely about acquisition of biblical knowledge.
  • "Keep at it till the finish. Don’t drag your feet. Be like those who stay the course with committed faith and then get everything promised to them."
  • If we just try to do the right thing, we’re never good enough. If we acknowledge that Jesus did it all, we enter into the presence of God.
  • "Christ’s death was also a one-time event, but it was a sacrifice that took care of sins forever."
  • I’m glad we don’t have to sacrifice animals anymore. I don’t own any animals. I used to own a cat. We left the cat in Iowa.
  • God wants us to encourage each other. He wants us to help each other out. We’re supposed to spur each other on. I’m guessing God doesn’t likes blog flaming.
  • "Anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to whose who seek him." That’s faith.
  • "Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed–that exhilarating finish in and with God."
  • God wants my best. That’s how I should be training.
  • "Honor marriage, and guard the sacredness of sexual intimacy between wife and husband." How ironic. I heard there’s a church doing a series on that very topic.
  • Do you think God had church business meetings in mind when this passage was inspired: "Be responsive to your pastoral leaders. Listen to their counsel. They are alert to the condition of your lives and work under the strict supervision of God. Contribute to the joy of their leadership, not its drudgery. Why would you want to make things harder for them?"
