After 15 years of marriage, I finally broke down. I decided I had been a purist for too long. For all these years, I stuck with my Weber charcoal grill. Part of it was because I was too cheap to buy a gas grill. Part of it was because I think meat tastes better when cooked over charcoal. Through the years, though, I’ve battled both mocking laughter from visiting friends and many evenings of waiting and waiting and waiting for the coals to get hot enough to cook my dinner. So, today, I finally broke down and made the big purchase.
I’m now the proud owner of a BBQ Grillware Model 41590 Three-Burner LP Gas Grill. This particular unit puts out 42,000 BTU with an additional 12,000 BTU side burner. That’s a lot of BTU…whatever that means. Emily thought we should purchase the smaller 35,000 BTU grill. I, of course, told her those grills are only for girlie-men. In fact, I’m pretty sure the unit she was looking at actually comes in the color pink. I, on the other hand, have a manly man’s man grill. So, when Phil or Andy or Cameron stop by for that backyard barbecue, I’m going to be ready to cook meat at a moment’s notice.
Speaking of manly men, I thought it would be fun to have a little contest associated with my new BBQ Grillware Model 41590 Three-Burner LP Gas Grill. The owner’s manual estimated assembly time would take less than 40 minutes. Anyone care to guess how long it took me? The closest to the actual time will be invited to join me for a hamburger on my new grill.

72 minutes
89 Minutes?
Probably will take you forever to get it assembled correctly,so that when I visit in May I’ll have a few days while you are away to assemble it for you. So do not plan folks over for that quick burger just yet. (just kidding….just wanted you to know that this web site of yours ended up on the bkfst bar here and I thought I’d let you know I’ve got your number!!)
two hours
You’re brilliant in a number of different areas, but I’m guessing this is not one of them. 3 hours and 28 minutes.
1 hour 45 minutes…Grill Assembly isn’t very simple or strategic. I guess it all depends on if you used the instructions or not.
Is this like the Price is Right? If so, then my guess is 3 hours and 29 minutes!
Based on the fact that you did not rant about your trails of putting it together and you took the time to write about the new grill on the day of the purchase means to me you have had a very positve experience. My guess is 40 minutes, although the comment from Poppi seems to indicate that I will be well off in my guess.
124 minutes.
Three hours? I have a Weber and do not plan to give into peer pressure ever…except…it seems someone has willfuly removed the cooking grate, can I even buy a replacement???? *sigh*
Well, it was one thing when my mom found my blog–now my father-in-law has also found it. Guess I’m going to have to be careful about using my repertoire of in-law jokes now.
I’ll let this contest go a little bit longer. But just in case you’re curious, I heard the neighborhood record for assembling a grill was 9 hours.

I will keep the price is right theme going :) 3 hours and 30 minutes :)
dj
3 hours 31 minutes (I watch too much “The Price is Right”).
If a Weber is as hard tot put together as no-namer grill, I will guess about 4 hours 12 minutes.
4 hours and 37 minutes!
No one has guessed that it took you less time than expected, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt and say 36 minutes.
Does brown nosing get me a burger?
My mantra is, “Everything takes way longer than you think.” When I estimate a job time, my wife always tells me to multiply it by 3. I once had a quick plumbing job to do in our basement. Denise asked, “How long do you think it will take you?” I thought it would take me 20 minutes, so I multiplied it by 3. “1 hour,” I said.” “So 3 hours then,” she said. I said, “No, I already did the multiply by 3 thing.” Denise said, “Whatever. It’ll still take you 3 hours.” Guess who was right? Therefore I have to guess it took you a mere 6 hours to assemble your many man’s man grill.
I’m going to say…400 minutes?
Also, I wonder if there aren’t better, more efficient ways of designing grills to allow for easier assembly? Maybe they keep them somewhat complicated in order to enhance the initial grilling experience? Perhaps this could serve as the springboard for your next book, “Simply Strategic Grill Assembly”? ;-)
I am still a purist (charcoal all the way baby!), but have assembled enough swing sets and desks to know that the people who write the instruction manual actually live in a different country and speak a different language than those who build the products. Additionally, those who write the instruction manual have never actually seen the product live, they have only seen roughly-translated emails of the product description. Based upon that knowledge, I don’t see how you could get this thing assembled in less than 4 hours. So the official “Price Is Right” guess is 8 hours and 15 minutes. I’m counting this as start to finish. I know that twice you stopped and had to walk away so that absolute frustration would not take over. These crucial breaks are still on the clock, part of the whole start to finish timing.
So I’m excited for the burger. Are you throwing in air fare from Portland, Oregon as well? :)
Well, the winner is…Kem Meyer. She guessed two hours. Emily timed me at exactly 1 hour and 55 minutes. Kem, I’ll let you arrange with Emily for a time to redeem your free grilled hamburger coupon for you and your family.
I do, however, want to give a special honorable mention prize to Amber Cox. Amber, you and Ryan are also invited to join me for a backyard hamburger whenever your schedule allows for that. Anyone that would think my handyman skills are good enough to beat the estimated assembly time deserves a free hamburger. Yes, brown nosing works.

Congrats Kem!
If you notice, Tony said free hamburger, you’re responsible for bringing your own bun and condiments.
