Box Score for Weekend of April 15/16

Here’s the "box score" for this past weekend at Granger Community Church.

Music: "What If" by Nichole Nordeman; "I Am" by Mark Shultz

Message: "The Mystery of Jesus" — Mark Beeson, senior pastor, taught from Luke 19:1-10 about how Jesus came "to seek and to save the lost." Mark also shared one of his classic stories: "Kick the Can."

DavinciService Highlights: The highlight for me was walking into the auditorium; it had been transformed into an art museum featuring the works of DaVinci. Like all services at Granger, it was more than just music and a message, it was an experience.

Stats: 10,262 total attendance (8,336 adults + 1,926 kids); 22.3% increase compared to Easter last year

Percentage of weekend attendance by day:

  1. Saturday Evening (3 services) = 52%
  2. Sunday Morning (4 services) = 48%

Final Notes: You read that right. We actually had more people show up on Saturday evening to celebrate Easter than we did on Sunday morning even though we had more services on Sunday morning. It was an unbelievable weekend. As I mentioned in a previous post, you can view the entire service on GCCwired.com.

    Hi Tony,

Just finished listening to the first sermon from the Da Vinci Code series. Mark Beeson is very good!!! I am looking forward to hearing more of him.

    One question though…

It seems to me that the sermon had little to do with the Da Vinci Code. I really liked it. But I am wondering if you got any feedback about people being disappointed that the book and issues weren’t more closely addressed.

We are currently putting together a 3 week series on the Da Vinci Code – and I am wondering how important it is to address Da Vinci Code stuff vs Stuff people need to know.

Ps. Love your site. Its one of the few sites I check daily.

“it had been transformed into an art museum featuring the works of DaVinci”

How did you guys do that? Through posters, video or what? That sounds really neat.

If you watch the video, Todd, you’ll see (and hear about) some of the ways they did it. Art, columns, etc, plus they built some of Leonardo’s invention sketches & hung ‘em from the ceiling! Maybe I can drop by this Saturday and see it in person…

Mark, I was wondering the same thing after watching/listening to the first message (the second week’s video is playing right now). It seems like a good example of what Tony & Tim talk about in Simply Strategic Growth, chapter 25, “Interpreting vs. Packaging.” This series seems like it’s mainly using The Da Vinci Code as packaging to present the selected topics rather than interpreting the novel & movie.

I’m doing a Da Vinci Code series right now, too (started yesterday), and by comparison I seem to be doing a lot more interpreting/responding. Hopefully it’s helpful, too. :)

Oh, I forgot. More on Saturday than on Sunday? That’s wild! Did you guys make a big push to your regulars to come on Saturday to make room on Sunday for guests? Or what is that? Whatever it is, I’m glad you guys had room for them all! :)

Yep, we’ll do a little “interpreting” of the book, but this is more of a “packaging” deal for us to address some important questions of the faith. Kudos to Rich for quoting chapter and verse from Simply Strategic Growth.

Regarding Saturday crowds, we did a bit of a push, but Saturday evening has quite a following on “normal” weekends around here as well. Check this week’s box score. The average attendance for the two Saturday services is actually higher than the three Sunday services.

so what about that interesting dramatic opener Tony? that was all about the actual fictional book “DaVinci Code” did you have a response to that at all? do i not want to hear it? i could ask you in person but this is my first visit to your blog and thought i would participate.

    Jeff,

I’m not sure if you had a hand in it, but that opener from week one was excellent. It was a great blend of pre-dubbed audio/video and live drama. Kudos to whomever produced it. I could go on, but I don’t want to hijack the post.

thanks a lot Josh. there were many hands in that one, and 2 of them were mine. There was some super huge arts leverage put into that little 5 minute piece and i was just curious if Tony thought it got the “Bang for the Buck” we were hoping for. i know i liked how the execution turned out (for the most part), but i was curious as to how it was received by the general public-or at least those who weren’t part of the “many hands”. If you read DaVinci code your response might have been “Oh, that’s just like DaVinci Code” if not it could have been “what in the heck are they doing-this place is really out there. i’m never coming back”. Hopefully it didn’t go that far for anyone–i’m new to this blogging thing-so if i wasn’t supposed to put my own two cents in to Josh’s comment-sorry.
