Summer Vacation

Yesterday, was day one of our summer vacation. We headed to Litchfield, MN to visit our good friends, Tim and Becky Magnuson. We met the Magnusons when we were doing time…err…I mean living in Iowa. A few quick observations from our day yesterday:

  • Chicago may be a great city to visit, but I couldn’t imagine living there. People must live in their cars. It seemed like we were living in Chicago a few times yesterday.
  • I wonder if Ikea is Swedish for "lots of cheap stuff that you have to assemble."
  • I’m curious to know who did the market research to determine that large inflatable gorillas will sell more vehicles?
  • Trent at Michiana Auto Pros was the third mechanic to try to fix the air conditioning in our van and the only one that succeeded. With a 12-hour drive on a 90-degree day, we were grateful for that.
  • Minnesota has a lot of lakes.
  • Turns out Litchfield is only minutes away from the world’s largest ball of twine. We’re going.

Dude, that is so funny! I ALWAYS ask that about the large inflatable apes at car lots. For 10 years I have literally asked my wife that question EVERY time we pass one.

    I’m glad I’m not alone.

If you believe the advertising from a few years back “IKEA is Swedish for ‘common sense’”. More like “where’s that blasted Allen wrench”, I think. But in reality, it is a made up word: Ingvar Kamprad was the 17 year old founder of the company, and he grew up in Elmtaryd Agunnaryd. Take the first letters of his name and where he grew up, and you get IKEA. A word assembled from other words – seems appropriate.
