A close friend of mine is about to join the blogosphere. Here’s the advice I gave him:
- be you
- speak into people’s lives
- keep it brief
- post regularly
- share the link love
- don’t try to sell
- don’t self-promote
- use humor
- be vulnerable
- build others up
- share your wisdom…but don’t make me feel dumb
- celebrate success…but don’t make me feel small
- tell stories
- don’t try to cover up your mistakes
- reveal your mistakes
- track your numbers
- don’t obsess about your numbers
- comment on other’s blogs
- subscribe to "your name"
- talk like a normal person
- check your spelling
- tell me about your family
- find your voice
- find your audience
- focus on that audience
- tell us what you love
- offer your opinions
- don’t spread gossip
- tell the truth
- spread the truth
- use lists
- allow comments
- check your links
- provide an email contact
- develop relationships
- use pictures
- keep it original
- tease us
- pay for good design
- remember…everything you write will be read
- don’t publish everything you write
- don’t correct posts (except for typos)
- update posts (but only sparingly)
- don’t ask me to link to your blog
- create conversation
- share what you’re learning
- stick with it
- have fun
- be you

Another 50 and you’d have another book… :)
Great stuff Tony!
Is that all? Gosh – I thought this was going to be hard!
You know I ask this with complete love & humor (insert sarcastic tone here): Is the line between 49 & 50 where brevity ends?
I am highly inspired by you and your blogabilities.
Wow! Bar is set high. [yet again] Great insights, Tony. Especially like #2… and #39 :)
#50. Be ok with a pink shirt now and then…
This is the same list for good preaching, too.
simply amazing. a must-read for any blogger. thank you!
Tony this has been a huge help and filled with great advice.
I’d love to hear in more detail on a few of these, any chance you may follow up on this topic?
Excellent ideas! Thank you!
I like your strategies. Sounds like the best bloggers are posiive thinkers who admit they are not perfect and look to the future. That is my type of person.
