HDTV Makes Me Happy

Just read a fun article in Wired magazine about the future of HD television. Made me realize that I haven’t talked enough, if at all, about how much I love that technology. I subscribe to HD service through Comcast. They also have a DVR that records the HD programming. The combination of HD and DVR is phenomenal.

Here’s what’s changed in my television viewing habits since I switched to this technology about a year ago:

  • I watch less television. Instead of flipping through channels to see what’s on, I tend to only watch programs that I’ve already recorded. The exception to that is sports.
  • I don’t have patience for commercials any longer. I fast forward through them when I’m watching a recorded program, and I mute them when I’m watching something live. (Makes me wonder what people do when we make an announcement during a service.)
  • I rarely watch any programming that isn’t in HD. In other words, there are probably close to 100 channels in my cable package that I ignore to watch the 15 or so HD channels.
  • As this article suggested, I’m watching more network programming because it’s available in HD.
  • I’m watching less Fox News (and news in general) because Comcast doesn’t currently offer any news channels in HD.
  • I could sit and watch Discovery HD all day long. God’s creation in HD is amazing!
  • Watching sports in HD is often times better than actually being at the game.

Now, not to alarm you or anything, but the next time you sit through your services at your church, pay attention to your video screens. Is your church ready for the world of HD? It’s a challenge because many people have better video and sound systems in their living rooms than most churches have in their auditoriums. Makes me thankful for companies like Clark ProMedia that are helping churches advance how they use new technology to communicate the Gospel message.
