Here are some of the key thoughts from Kem’s breakout session at MinistryCOM this morning:

  • First priority isn’t to change someone. First priority is to connect with someone. If you don’t connect with someone, you’ll never have the opportunity to encourage change.
  • Know your audience. What do they like to do with their free time?  Where do they go for fun? What do they hate? Are you trying to connect with everybody? That’s impossible. Why are you worth their hassle? Why would I get out of bed and come to your church on Sunday?
  • There are two categories of people we are trying to reach–those that are hostile and those that feel like an outsider.
  • You are not in control. Just because you put something out doesn’t mean you’re in control of how someone reads it.
  • Tell one story at a time. If you don’t do this, messages compete against each other…even if both messages are positive.
  • Mo options is not mo better.  Life is complicated. Church shouldn’t be.
  • Websites aren’t for selling. People already know what they want when they show up. When you try to sell, you’re just making life more confusing and cluttered. Simplify.
  • People don’t care about what you have to say. Two weeks after "Do Not Call" registry list was opened, over 50 million people signed up.  "Sometime I feel like I’m getting spammed by my own church." It’s all good stuff, but it’s more than I’m prepared to hear.
  • Have some fun and take some risks. It’s OK to laugh. Sometimes it’s OK to be random. Say what people are already thinking.
