Here are my thoughts and highlights from Song of Songs as I continue my journey through the Bible:
- "Tell me where you’re tending your flocks, where you let them rest at noontime." Now we know where the "nooner" originated.
- "All I want is to sit in his shade, to taste and savor his delicious love. He took me home with him for a festive meal, but his eyes feasted on me!" This woman was freaky.
- "My lover is mine, and I am his. Nightly he strolls in our garden, delighting in the flowers." Did she say "nightly?" Lucky guy…
- I need to be more creative in choosing the words I use to tell Emily how much I love and cherish her.
- "Your hair…flows and shimmers, like a flock of goats in the distance streaming down a hillside." Sounds like she needs to use some Pantene.
- "Your breasts are like fawns, twins of a gazelle." Ok, I admit it. I don’t get that one. Fawns? Maybe I just need to stare at my wife’s chest more, but I’ve never thought about fawns.
- I love how he admits it was love at first sight. "You’ve captured my heart, dear friend. You looked at me, and I fell in love. One look my way and I was hopelessly in love!" That’s romance.
- "I went to my garden, dear friend, best lover! Breathed the sweet fragrance. I ate the fruit and honey, I drank the nectar and wine." The dude was pretty kinky as well.
- I love how the woman builds up her lover: "He’s one in a million. There’s no one quite like him!…That’s my lover, that’s my man."
- He returns the favor: "There’s no one like her on earth, never has been, never will be. She’s a woman beyond compare. My dove is perfection."
- The man also uses the best compliment ever: "You are tall and supple, like the palm tree." He must have loved palm trees as well.
- The man has affirmed the woman so often, that she has great confidence in his love for her. "I am my lover’s. I’m all he wants. I’m all the world to him!" I hope Emily feels that same security.
- "Love is invincible facing danger and death. Passion laughs at the terrors of hell." Love, romance and passion are key to preserving marriage and helping couples face the challenges of life…together.
- "My breasts are full–and when my lover sees me, he knows he’ll soon be satisfied." For those of you who think this book is an allegory for God’s love for his people–that’s just gross.
