iPhone @ Cingular

Iphone
In case you missed it yesterday, Steve Jobs unveiled the new iPhone that will be available in June. The phones will only be available through Cingular. Makes me proud to be a Cingular customer. And, in case you’re wondering, I think I’m going to be an early adopter on this one…especially when the nice people at Apple and Cingular send me one of those fancy phones to demo.

I posted my thoughts on it this morning on my blog, as well.. I’m going to predict that this device (but possibly the second version at a lower price) will be a “Category Killer” ala the iPod

Why can’t everybody think like Apple?

matt, the bigger question is this: what would the church look like if we thought like Apple?

I just watched Steve Jobs keynote. Your comment is exactly what I was thinking. The church needs to be that innovative, but that simple also. How do u get to demo the iPhone? I’m ridiculously jealous!!

Aubrey, I’m dreaming of getting to demo the phone.

Lol! Between both of our dreaming minds, I’m sure we can come up with a way!!

T – you are exactly right. that is the bigger question. What comes to mind is a rather polorizing statement I Erwin McManus made one time when I was meeting with Mosaic:

The church in North America is dying, because it cares more about its traditions than its next generation

Apple has been successful, because of an almost willful disregard for the norm. They have accepted that the rules can change – and when they do change them, they immediately set the dialog.

More McManus, paraphrased – “a church that reacts to the culture is already irrelevant. Our churches should be defining the culture, not responding to it…”
    very Jobs-ish….

There are a few flaws with this device that have to be addressed before it can be a “category killer.”

-No 3G connectivity. It only supports EDGE for data, which is dog-slow comparted to EVDO and HSDPA.

-This is not a smartphone. Contrary to what Apple says, the device will not allow 3rd party software to be installed (like Windows Mobile and PalmOS do.) So you will need to rely on whatever software Apple allows you to run.

-No support for MS Exchange or MS Office software

-No ability to sync wirelessly over the air or grab songs from iTunes this way.

    -No expandable memory.

    -No removeable battery.

There are a lot more “good” things about the iPhone than bad things, but they have a lot of room for improvement.

Some should really look into pulling their lips away from the Apple crack pipe….

It’s not as glorious as it could be by a long shot….

    - Only 2.0 megapixels still camera?

    - No Video Recording?
