C3: Ed Young
Sitting here in row three this morning behind the bigwigs at the C3 Conference. I would have to say, Craig Groeschel has the best back-of-the-head hair. The music is great. I’m feeling the bass in my chest. Love that. I love to feel the music.
Ed Young opened the conference.
- “I think the church should be the most creative force in the universe.”
- Ed explained the purpose of the conference is to encourage us to move from “what if” to “what is.”
- Delegation. Most of us don’t understand it. “Delegation without investigation is relegation. Delegation is the catalyst of creativity.”
- We don’t create enough margin in our lives for creativity.
- If you stay at “what is” too long, you find yourself at “what was.”
- “Delegation is empowering people with ‘what if’ ideas to those who can turn them into ‘what is.’”
- Here’s the problem with confusion. “If you’re confused about something you don’t really know you’re confused.”
- Three things that prevent the investigative process of delegation: 1. Fear of conflict, 2. Fear of chaos, and 3. Don’t want to deal with the carnage.
- If a staff member or volunteer isn’t a good fit with a certain role, first move them. Then remove them.
- “The moment people stop leaving is the moment you stop leading.”
- “Every time you go to the next level, people will leave.” Both staff and volunteers.
- Things you can’t delegate: 1. vision, 2. team buidling, 3. organization, and 4. investigation
- Worship leadership needs to include planners, performers, players and passion.
- “When pride walks on the stage, God walks off.”
- Who do you delegate to? People who can do things better than me. People who “get it.” Here are the charactistics of those people: 1. They’ve gone through a conflict, 2. They have a strong track record relationally, 3. They need to be unselfish, and 4. They have to be a “why not” person.
- “The church is in the promotion business.”
- Number one way to delegate is through staff meetings. That’s where we ask the hard questions.
- “I have fought for an entrepreneurial spirit.” I don’t want to maintain. Don’t worship the process.
- “We are in the people business.”
- Why delegate? It’s the catalyst for creativity. “For us to reach our potential, we have to delegate.”
- We are in a marathon. We need margins in our life. We have to delegate.

I’m sitting a few rows behind you – and I must say that YOU have the best back-of-the-head hair!!!
Oh, and thanks for the compliment on the low-end bass in the room. We LOVE making people feel the music :)
