Amazing! What a start to Unleash. I’m seeing lots of friends. I’ll post pix later. Perry launched the conference this morning teaching from Matthew 17.
- “Church is an incredibly confusing place if you don’t know the rules.” When you don’t understand, the rules are confusing.
- “If you’re Baptist, you think your normal.”
- The problem with most churches is this. They say, “If you don’t know the rules, to Hell with you.”
- America is seeking God like crazy, but they’re not coming to Church to find him.
- We need creative environments.
- “Christianity is the most exciting thing to ever hit this planet, and it’s taken the Church 2,000 years to make it boring.”
- The sermon begins in the parking lot. Within the first 15 minutes, people decide whether or not they’re going to return–before they’ve even heard the sermon.
- Every week is someone’s first week in this church.
- We give people half-baked, pitiful, lethargic presentations and we pray for the Holy Spirit to use it to reach people for Jesus. God’s not going to bless that.
- We have to offer our very best. We have to have the hard conversations with people that are not a fit in order to offer our best.
- “The only people that get mad when you talk about money are the people who aren’t giving any money.” You need to teach about money.
- We need to look beyond ourselves.
- We’ve been commanded to take this Message to the world.
- “What type of people do you want in your church?” You have to decide that. It impacts how you do church.
- “The time when people need grace the most, we say ‘to Hell with you.’” “We can’t pretend our poo-poo doesn’t stink.”
- “You can’t get your church too big.”
- There are thousands of names written on our walls. They are friends of people in our church who need Jesus. “Don’t tell me ‘it’s not about the numbers.’ If you say that, I’ll punch you in the throat.” :-)
- We need to pay attention.
- “Get up,” and “don’t be afraid.”
- Creative people are not normal. They’re weird. Creative people are happy when the pastor plans ahead. They can’t be creative (or happy) when you give them something to create on Wednesday or Thursday for a message on Sunday.
- When you take steps to honor God, people will criticize you. “When you begin to do what God wants you to do, you’re going to piss some people off.”
- We need to focus on what matters.
- People’s problems are not their behavior–people’s problems are that they don’t know Jesus.
- Boycotting Disney as an example. That’s stupid. Disney isn’t a Christian organization. We can’t expect a organization that isn’t a Christian organization to act like a Christian organization. That’s like getting mad at a duck because it acts like a duck. “All you do is quack. Stupid duck.”
- “When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus” (Mt: 17:8).
- We need to focus on Jesus.
- What we do matters for eternity.

“Don’t tell me ‘it’s not about the numbers.’ If you say that, I’ll punch you in the throat.”
Tony tell Perry I’ve got his back…oh yeah…we can have a throat punching party…cause there are numbers of people going to hell and we should be worried about that.

I don’t know about anybody else, but the last thing I want to hear is someone who calls themselves a spiritual leader is telling people to punch them in the throat, even if it’s a joking manner. I’d rather be a buddhist or someone who actually is spiritual- rather than someone who seems so angry if anybody says anything about him. If he’s confident enough in who he is, why does he always sound so defensive?
Perhaps Perry should have gone into professional wrestling rather than ministry.

Ian… have you BEEN to NewSpring? You are so taking this out of context… kinda like many do regarding using a verse in the Bible for THEIR own good!
Dude… I have to say that defending Jesus’ blood that was shed on the cross IS… again, IS something to get defensive about! Hell is a real place and I don’t want anyone to be there!
God has ROCKED my world and I won’t set back and let you talk about something that you have obviously NOT experienced first hand!

Jane,
Relax, girl. You sound like you’re in some kind of cult or something.
If you’re sure of what you’ve experienced there, then great! Good for you.
I’m not a critic. In fact, I’m not even a “church person”. I’m someone honestly seeking spirituality and God.
A good friend told me to check out blogs and websites for this church and that church. Well, I have been pretty dissapointed with what I see on all these blogs of these pastors .
I’m simply letting you know that I see a bunch of “spiritual leaders” who come across so arrogantly that I’m not sure I see any spirituality anywhere.
Talking about ripping faces off, punching people in the throat, trying to be “hip” and “cool” and “rock and roll”. Dressed in jeans and t-shirt.
I don’t live in the Bible Belt. Maybe that’s my problem.

I too used to think Perry and NS came off quite abrasive in their writing, but after visiting today, I see they’re passion and drive to win souls. It reminds me to focus on our vision and do whatever it takes to see it fulfilled. Thank you Tony, Perry, NS Staff and NS Volunteers for your passion for Anderson, SC.

Ian, if you’re genuine in your desire to discuss spirituality and leadership and you really are unchurched, I’d love to engage this conversation.
Based on your comments, it doesn’t sound like a church like NewSpring would be the right fit for you. We don’t expect it to be for everyone. Obviously, Perry’s style and leadership resonates with a lot of people, and we’re seeing thousands of lives transformed. That’s very cool. That said, just because it works for lots of people, doesn’t mean it has to work for you.
Email me, and let’s talk more.

Hey Tony!
I didn’t get a chance to say hi yesterday, you always had a group around you, but thanks from me & my team at Center Pointe Church in Goshen Ohio. We had a great time and can’t wait until next year for “Unleash 2″. I really enjoyed the networking opportunities and the openness of the NewSpring staff & volunteers. I would like a little more teaching rather than Q&A, and make the Unleash T-SHIRTS available to everyone!!
Looking forward to what God is doing there & here.

“If you’re Baptist, you think your normal”…
Ok, someone tell me what was meant by this statement? I don’t know whether to be offended or not.
I was raised in a Baptist church and have since tried various denominations and non-denominational churches and find that I never agree 100% with the theology of any church/denomination. I don’t think anybody does but we have to find the right place so that what we feel is not negotiable (like say, how someone receives salvation) is in agreement with what we believe. The other stuff (like whether to use grape juice or wine in communion) we are able to agree to disagree in Christian love.
With all that said I have come to realize that no denomination or church should be singled out because not a single one of them is perfect.
I can only assume that since Perry’s church is not associated with any Baptist Association or Convention that he was ripping the denomination but I don’t know why or what it added to his presentation.
Tony, or anyone who was there. Please elaborate on what was meant with this comment.
Thanks,

MacAubie,
During that same sermon Perry did state that NS is part of the Baptist Association. I hate you felt like you were offended! Being a part of NS can not be put into words!! Either you love Perry or you don’t but one thing is for sure the man is in love with Jesus and he has been blessed with an amazing gift of speaking and teaching the word of God!! I’m was so excited that I was able to take the day to volunteer and be a part of UNLEASH it was awesome.

Kristy,
I did not realize that they were a part of a Baptist Association. Either way I was not offended. From this post the single comment did not make sense to me and I was trying to find out if he was making an “off” comment on a particular denomination or not.
To offend me personally he would have had to make a personal slander towards me which, of course he did not.
Though I don’t agree with all the theology of any denomination or church I don’t believe in making negative comments on any of them. Mainly because I am not perfect myself.
It appears your comment is correct on Perry, “either you love him or you don’t” for essentially everyone on this post. I take a different road and hold my judgment because I have never heard him.
I can say that I could find a more Christian and tactful way of being passionate but that is just me.

I absolutely loved the Unleash conference…it was refreshing, inspiring and motivating. Thank you Tony and please extend thanks to the entire NewSpring team for excecuting a brilliant event.
I love the fact that so many people walked away either challenged or offended. Isn’t that the desired result of the gospel always? Jesus defintely polarized crowds. If you were offended by the content or approach of this conference, let me encourage you to allow this to be step one of becoming unoffendable. Who are we to judge the fruit on another’s tree? Instead of criticizing and getting our feathers ruffled, excel in the gifts and the call that you possess.
God bless

Man. Some people just need to get a sense of humor. Beyond the “fist in your throat” type comments (which I loved by the way), if you couldn’t pick up on Perry’s passion for people then you just missed it BIG time. No one could deny the passion to serve like those volunteers. Where do you think they get that passion - and personality? It comes from the vision caster - Perry.
And let me tell you this…at most of the conferences I have been to over the last few years, the conference speakers, staff and host pastor are no where to be seen once they leave the stage. They are hanging out in the green room amongst themselves. But Perry and Tony and the New Spring staff were all visible and available. Heck, Perry was out front greeting people before the conference began!
You had to walk in the door with your eyes wide shut to miss the passion for people.
I felt like the passion - and compassion - were both thick and genuine. And it made for one of the most meaningful and inspiring conference settings I’ve ever experienced.
Thanks New Spring!

To the attendees and volunteers of UNLEASH…THANK YOU!! :) It was an honor to have you join us for such a great day! :)
Macaubie, I can’t help but read your comments and think that somewhere along the line you must think you were appointed to the role, “judge & jury!”
Which, you weren’t, by the way…in case you missed it…or you just weren’t listening, maybe had your ears closed?
It is so great that you feel the need to share your opinion as if it is God-given law, but it is actually quite…nauseating!
Don’t get me wrong, opinions are great, we all have them and they matter to no one as much as they do to ourselves.
This was my favorite line…
“I can say that I could find a more Christian and tactful way of being passionate but that is just me.”
Ummm…then do it! :)

MacAubie,
NS is truly a terrific place to grow closer to Christ. I too grew up in a Baptist church and struggled with different theologies and attitudes of churches for many years. If you are in the Anderson area, we would LOVE for you to drop in and visit us at NS because we are all about showing people the true love of Christ. Perry is awesome - and his comment about Baptists could apply to any denomination who has people within it who are focused on the denomination or the “religion” of church instead of focusing on the salvation that we all can have - regardless of our denomination- through Jesus.
Being analytical and questioning is certainly in our nature as humans - especially if we question the sincerity of churches when it comes to reaching people. My hope and prayer is that you will find a church home where you will be fed and will learn to use your gifts to feed others.
Joy in Christ,
Angela

Is Perry abrasive? Yep.
Is Perry telling the truth? Yep.
Is his passion needed? Yep.
Do I want him to punch me in the throat? Nope.

As a United Methodist Minister, I have often made jokes at the expense of my denomination. I think that is what Perry was doing to convey his point about being creative to reach out. I currently serve a traditional type church, and I LOVE that NS is being so innovative to reach out to lost people. I look forward to the day when I am serving at a church that places people over tradition in eternal matters.
Thank you for the conference, and I look forward to Unleash 2008!
