Remember those Sunday evening services that you used to go to where no one really wanted to be there but people attended because they thought that had to. No one prepared, because the service was always an afterthought. On special occasions, the pastor would throwout the playbook and announce it was a hymn sing. Everyone would call out their favorite hymn number, and whoever yelled the loudest would have their song sung. Well, we’re going to do something like that next week at NewSpring, only it’s nothing like that.

We’re launching a new series next weekend at NewSpring. Each week, the "audience" will get to choose the song with which the band will open the service. If you’d like the play along, you can text your vote for the your favorite song to 221.9784. Here are the songs that could potentially be played next weekend:

  • "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd — Text "A"
  • "Miss Independent" by Kelly Clarkson — Text "B"
  • "Jesus, Take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood — Text "C"
  • "It’s Not Over" by Daughtry — Text "D"

Don’t forget that you have to text your vote by midnight tonight (Sunday). And, in case you’re wondering, if there’s a God in Heaven, I’m praying he won’t let "Jesus, Take the Wheel" be played on Easter.

For those of you who don’t attend NewSpring, I’ll announce the winning song here next Sunday night after our five Easter services. For those of you who attend NewSpring, you’ll have to join us next weekend to see for yourself what song wins. And, I’d recommend you join us for one of the two services on Saturday evening (April 7 at 4 and 6 p.m.) to also be a part of the B93.7 live remote.

    Tony down here in the south this ritual you are speaking of is known as 5th Sunday Night Singing.

    Can outsiders vote? What’s the area code? Guess which one I vote for? (Hint – I live in Alabama). We are singing “It’s not over” Sunday. I can’t wait!

    You guys rock! But be careful – the same people who are keeping Sanjaya alive might just make sure that “Jesus Take the Wheel” gets played!

    I don’t care what songs you do, as long as Rosangela??(name?) sings and you put it on the webscast.
