Do You Have a Song?

Lee and RoseAngela wrote a song that was used in today’s services. Great song. I was curious, though, to know more about their creative process.

Did RoseAngela sit down at the piano and the song just sort of came to her? Did Lee get inspired when he was singing in the shower? Maybe one of them went out to dinner, and ended up writing the lyrics on a napkin? Lee knows his Bible. Did God give him the song during one of his daily devotional times?

I asked Lee about it. Turns out our worship leaders actually schedule time to write music. The song came out of one of those sessions. Lee and RoseAngela planned to write that song.

It was a good reminder to me that creativity rarely sneaks up on us.

  • It usually involves practicing for years to hone our skills.
  • It typically includes other people.
  • Most times we actually have to discipline our lives to set aside time to create.
  • It almost always involves hard work.
  • Usually you have to create and fail many times before you find success.

No, I don’t believe everyone has the gift that Lee and RoseAngela have. I do, however, believe each of us can be creative. We were created in God’s image. God is creative. I believe God designed us to be creative as well.

What if you’re the person that’s supposed to create that song, that book, that picture, that invention, that strategy? Are you disciplining your life to see that happen?

Do you have a song?

Great post. Recently my song has been blogging. It feels like a black hole of time, but I know the hard work will pay off.

    Tony,
Thanks for this post. I am a writer, worship leader, etc … and it’s often that I find myself scheduling everything EXCEPT creative time.

I’ve been promising myself to carve out at least one hour per day to play piano, compose, and write … I’ve not been very faithful to that, unfortunately.

I’m preparing an ongoing series on my blog about “Mistakes Worship Leaders Make” … and one of those will be about NOT scheduling creative time … I know from experience!

    For the Kingdom,
    Fred

Absolutely right. Just this past week I didn’t feel creative, Friday and Saturday I began to suspect it was the “being busy ” that was in the way. I realize it is because I failed to plan creative times. You are right.

    Great post.

    Great song.

    Great Job.

Tony, I am a little behind in my blog reading since Nikita is here now. But dang… you are ALL over my toes! I’m going to come back to this post in about 5 weeks after I have sent Nikita back to Belarus so that I can really act on your encouragement!
