In a post from yesterday, I identified the worship leader at Buckhead by the name of Moxie. I admitted my name-envy. Certainly, you must agree–Moxie is a cool name. Turns out, though, that may not really be his name. I received an email message from a fairly reliable source (let’s call him "Deep Throat") last night that indicated Moxie may actually be named Mark.
Now, I’m not trying to belittle Marks across the globe including Mark Cuban, Mark Batterson, Mark Hamill and Marky Mark minus the Funky Bunch. But, let’s face it–"Mark" is in the same category as "Tony." Neither are likely to be considered rock star names.
So, if you’re following this developing conspiracy at home, first, we have the question of whether Moxie is Moxie or if, indeed, Moxie is really Mark. Secondly, we have the question of who may or may not be involved in a potential cover up. Who else may have known Moxie was just a stage name. Was the Buckhead music director aware? Did the campus pastor know? Is it possible that Andy Stanley himself may have known of this dubious moniker? And, if he did, that begs the question: What did the Senior Pastor know, and when did he know it?

It’s always best, in HUGE cover-ups like this to, in the words of DEEP THROAT, follow the money. It always leads to the top.
is he british? the brits pronounce mark without the ‘r’, and the ‘a’ is different, so mark ends up rhyming with ’sock’. if you were to add ‘ey’ to the end of the british pronunciation, it’d sound like ‘moxie’. or maybe that’s not it at all! haha!
tony,
the name thing is a conspiracy to make you discontent with you very common name tony…there are so many tony’s in the world, can one more ‘tony’ make a difference?
you’re the only “tony” blog that I read on the web…so actually you’re famous…tony the famous blog guy…now that’s signifcant.
all kidding aside…thanks for your blog and for having a sense of humor about so many interesting things in life, life’s to short to not have a sense of humor…I enjoy reading your stuff…keep it coming.

Tony, Tony, Tony…the real tragedy here is that you believed Moxie was a given name. Come on, Moxie??? That has to be a nickname. The Woods didn’t name their kid “Tiger”, the Johnsons didn’t name their kid “Magic”, the Cruise’s didn’t name their kid “Suri”…oh wait, they did. Maybe it is Moxie.
Pssst.
You might want to reference the “Road to Tower Place” blog that Buckhead Church did about their recent move. Go to

(disappears into the shadows again)
i am not now, nor ever have been, a member of any subversive organization.
Ah, c’mon, Tony – you can’t put Mark & Tony in the same boat … MARK is a book of the BIBLE! But alas, I think “Tony” is even a cooler name than FRED. Who names their kid “Fred” anymore? Go figure. :-)
Not everyone can be special and have different names that are recognized ;)
It’s great having a different name…until I meet someone from long ago and they say…hey, I used to know a Rindy…oh that always worries me ;)
I can dispel some of the myth behind Moxie. Mark Gibson is an Atlanta area native and in high school was part of a band called Sundry. Those guys rocked. They had a great local following. The band members decided to go their separate ways about two years after high school, some went to college, one went to Nashville and Mark’s alter ego was formed, Moxie, and became the front for his new band. Mark is a great guy with an amazing heart. He’s a talented song writer and performer. Just a little dish to help you learn about the real Mark.
Tony not a rockstar name?? I’s sorry but are you not familiar with the 80’s R&B band “Tony, Toni, Tone”? Or the famous Tony Bennett? HUGE rocker…or huge light rocker. Don’t sell yourself short. Until that time comes, consider yourself a Blogstar.
Well, yes I am following this at home which happens to be my office too. My poor desk must thank you. It has been in need of a real cleaning for a couple of days now. I was laughing so hard I banged the desk and papers went flying. Now my floor? Well, that’s a different story.
And no, my name is not short for any thing. I was named after a church and it’s bus – The Camey Special. That area is now a town in Texas. Look it up and see for yourself – Camey, Tx.
Thanks for the laugh, man. You’re a real giver. At least you got THAT going for ya…… ;)
Maybe you could become Toxie…
Tony,
what’s really crazy is that my birth name is actually Moxie. I just go by Mark.

Tony, I’m the music director at Buckhead Church. Mark is, of course, one of our go-to worship leaders. But a few years ago, in his teens and early twenties, I was his manager. I came up with the nickname Moxie for him because it nailed his personality and sounded more appealing in the marketplace. His name is Mark Davis Gibson. We marketed him, and his whole band in fact, as Moxie Davis. The nickname Moxie stuck. There ya go, dude.
Tony,
I think the conspiracy just went deeper. Did you see the initials on that last post? “DS”……
Do you know any “DS” that can type for itself? I’m just sayin’… If they could – Nintendo would really be onto something.
This is great!!!! Tony………….Tony is a great name! I like it better than Mark! But…….whats in a name anyway? Take care dude!
