FeedBurner Stats: Operating Systems
Aug92007 Filed under: Technology Author: Tony MorganJust in case you’ve succumbed to those clever Mac commercials and think "everyone must be getting a Mac." Think again. I just ran the FeedBurner stats for the last 30 days. These are percentage of people using each operating system:
- Microsoft Windows = 81%
- Mac OS X = 18%
- Linux = 1%
The world still revolves around Windows. By the way, only 6% of Windows users have upgraded to Vista. Wonder how that compares to Microsoft’s expectations.

ahh, but the percentage of mac users is going up, while the percentages of windows users are going down.

As a part of the 1% on the bottom and a system administrator. I have to say only the desktop world revolves around windows. UN*X is still king when it comes to running high usage, highly available enterprise and web applications

That is actually a strong number for the OSX platform. Your content obviously appeals to more creative and intellectual types. That’s also why Firefox usage is high amongst your readers.
I would expect that Microsoft had hoped for better with Vista. I think they shot themselves in the foot on a number of campaigns, including overpricing (something Apple is far too fond of.)
From what I understand, Vista is the stepping stone to the Windows OS that people might really dig. They’ll be locking up the kernel in the next version and that will really help secure the end user’s experience. I guess we’ll see if that stands up or not.
I had not heard that 6% stat yet. Yet I’m not surprised by it when I count up the number of friends and family that have Vista. I stop counting at 1—and that was a new purchase, not an upgrade.

My parents just bought a new HP with Vista. They just aren’t as technically sound as most of the people out there. Well, my husband and myself have been over there quite a bit helping them with that horrid piece of equipment. I don’t want Vista, I do not like what I have seen of it.

I HATE Vista!!!
My wife has it on her new laptop and I am getting ready to reformat it back to XP. Not only is the whole interface horrid to use they did absolutely nothing that i can see from a user stand point to improve on XP.
I will never be a Mac person either. The world runs on Microsoft for the most part so why try to fight it.(though for some business and artistic applications MAC rocks).

Well I am making the jump as we speak… ordered the brand new, just released Imac yesterday. I wonder if that will trigger a percentage jump soon?
