Jacob, Kayla and I went to our first Clemson football game last night. In case you didn’t hear (in Columbia or Athens), Clemson won. It was a great night. The kids had a blast. Here are five lessons I learned from the evening.
- If thousands of people make some noise, it can get pretty loud. Jacob agreed, this is the loudest stadium we’ve ever been in. Don’t know if it’s because of the way the stadium was constructed or just because Clemson fans know how to get loud. When lots of people get focused on one thing, though, they can sure make some noise.
- People will do some crazy things to worship something they love. Paint their bodies. Raise their arms in the air. Jump around. Sing songs. Clap. Chant. Even in the craziness of a nationally televised game, though, there are folks that are charged with keeping the “worship” orderly. (It was really funny watching the students charge the field three different times at the end of the game.)
- When you really believe in something, you’ll take a stand. Clemson fans
don’t sit down. I haven’t figured out why they installed seats in the
stadium. The fans were on their feet for the entire four hours of the
game.
- People will put their money where their heart is. They’ll spend
$30,000, as an example, just to own a piece of land to tailgate before
and after the game. They’ll invest millions of dollars into a facility
to help recruit new athletes. It’s amazing the cash people will lay down for something that they love.
- When the cause is big enough, people will give their time. I’m convinced time is the scarcest commodity today. But, yesterday, people started showing up early in the morning to stake their territory. They hung out with friends. They served each other meals. They walked miles to find a parking spaces. They stood in the football stadium for over four hours. They sat in traffic for a couple more hours after the game. It takes a big investment of time to support something that’s bigger than yourself.

Gee, Tony, I got the feeling there MIGHT have been a double message in that post somewhere!!!LOL… by the way, I agree totally…with BOTH messages!
It’s official! The Morgans are now indoctrinated into upstate SC life– you’ve been to Death Valley and swam in the Sea of Orange!!!
You must admit, Clemson fan or not, it is a rocking place to be for a football game, huh?

6. People adjust to your strategy.
Even if you have great success early on, people will adjust to what you are doing. If you don’t continue to adjust (or in church terms innovate) you will stagnate and loose your edge.
For those who didn’t watch, Clemson dominated the first 25 minutes of the game, but slowly let Florida State back into the game after that.

Tony, I’m not sure if it is about the cause or the community that has been built. My husband bleeds Carolina Blue. He went to school their, he was in the Rams club, he bought season BB tickets before he moved too far away to use them. He would rather be in Chapel Hill than anywhere in the world. Because he is apart. When we, the church, can make people feel apart of the community, they will do anything for the community.

with a wife an alum of usc (the east coast one) it boggles the mind the money they spend on tailgate spots. i know south carolina is a social state, but that is just amazing to me, and i am from an sec school.

Tony, I saw that same game last night. One other lesson from it - if you take the offensive to the enemy you will wear him down.

Great lessons! Another lesson almost learned: If you don’t stay aggressive and on the offensive your opponent might come back.
A lesson taught by my Sooners this weekend: If you want to play with the big boys you better bring your A game. 79-10

Totally, totally agree with your message (both of them!) We are BIG Ohio State fans…born, raised & live in Columbus and the fans are rabid up here! My question…how much time and energy do I actually spend on things of eternity? I LOVE OSU football…but it will eventually end and what do I have left if that’s the focus of my passion?! GREAT post! Thanks!
