Emily and I both walked out of yesterday’s service grateful for the opportunity we have to be a part of what God is doing through the community of NewSpring Church. Among other things, Perry’s message was very challenging. Here were my two favorite quotes from yesterday:
- "You are only as deep as the last person you served in the name of Jesus."
- "We want Heaven to be more crowded because we existed as a church."
I desire to put truth like that into action in my personal faith journey and my role as a ministry leader. That’s good stuff.

Great thoughts!! love it!
I can’t figure out “you are only as deep as the last person your served in the name of Christ?”
I am all for calling out and even shaming self-righteous know-it-alls who haven’t served or loved someone in their life…but love argue Bible and Theology…
But…it feels like over-reaction to the point of downplaying deep thinking, shaping your mind, loving God with your mind, knowing Bible and Theology, etc.
Why can’t we call people to love and serve AND to grow in their knowledge of Bible, Theology, wrestle with the deeper things, learn to think critically, etc.
I fear the shallowness that will remain if we tit for tat with self-righteousness by simply saying serve and love…that’s a both / and and it seems like our generation of churches keep framing it as an either / or in our defensiveness.
Thoughts?
I love that the first quote helps people focus on “going deeper” by SERVING others. Too many times we want a closer relationship with Christ by sitting and listening rather than doing and serving.
Thanks for sharing the Perryisms! :)
I love that…
“You are only as deep as the last person you served in the name of Jesus.”
I’ve gotta write that one down! Thanks!
