Mac Richard from Lake Hills Church in Austin, Texas took the platform for the first session after lunch. Here are the highlights of his talk:
- Every leader has to embrace the tension between community and responsibility.
- “You’re only as accountable as you want to be.”
- After watching Ed and Mac, I’ve determined I need a black belt with a big buckle.
- Hebrews 10:24
- We need to be people who lead out of love and good deeds.
- Spurs were invented by the Romans to encourage horses to run towards spears and flames.
- I wonder if spurs can be used to get my kids to clean up their rooms.
- Leaders are shaped under the hammer and the heat.
- If you don’t have turnover on your staff, something is wrong. (Tony says: I’m not sure I totally buy that.)
- Leadership is lonely.
- Set the bar high, and guard the bar.
- The bar includes subjective criteria like “joy.”
- Mac and I weigh the same.

In terms of staff turnover being positive or even necessary- I don’t think I buy that either, but what I do buy is the need for the staff members to be constantly growing and changing as individuals. If attitudes, ideas and approaches aren’t changing among the staff members, the only way to get out of the resulting rut is to change the staff composition.

Staff turnover is inevitable…it’s just gong to happen. How we respond to it is what makes or breaks the team.

So Tony, if you get a black belt with a big buckle are you going to start listening to country music?

Nice to see that someone else has the same ADD-style of note-taking.
