Date Questions

RingsEmily and I went out tonight. Lots of good food. And, lots of good conversation. As is typical,
we got on the topic of parenting and marriage. Emily asked an interesting question. She’s noticed in recent weeks that lots of married couples don’t wear wedding rings. She wonders why that’s the case.

With that, I’m doing a little informal survey. If you are married and don’t wear a wedding ring, why is that?

I wear mine. But unfortunately my wife lost her rings somehow and our ministry salary hasn’t exactly been diamond level.

I didn’t wear one for the first 13 years of our marriage. The reason was that I worked as a surgical PA doing trauma surgery, and I lost 2 having to take it off every time I wanted to scrub my hands for surgery. It became a money issue for us. But for the last 7 years I have been in full time ministry, and haven’t taken it off since.

    The fat excuse. :)

I carry an extra 25 lbs these days and my ring doesn’t fit at the moment. I refuse to get the ring resized. I am working on the weight instead.

I got fat and it doesn’t fit my finger very well. It is a little tight so it chaffs my finger if I wear it to long. So when I am around the house I usually don’t wear it. But when I leave the house I put it on. My wife understands, she thinks I am fat too. LOL, JK, kinda.

    i’ve always wondered that, too.

i remember i couldn’t WAIT to wear my wedding ring. i used to keep it on my keychain before the big day b/c i was so excited to be a married man with his own wedding band.

i’ll be curious to see what everyone says.

Lost mine last summer cooking BBQ and talking on the phone with my buddy – who attends NewSpring, BTW. My dad even brought his “Nerd Papaw Metal Detector” to try to find it, but no luck.

I felt strange and self-concious not wearing mine, and my beautiful bride bought me a new one for Christmas!

As far as why most folks don’t wear their’s – I’m gonna call “fat” as the top answer.

It’s a scientifically proven fact that it makes your left arm longer than your right. And so like who wants to have one arm longer than the other?

My ring is a little big for my finger. It’s titanium, and therefore cannot be resized. I do wear it most of the time, unless it’s cold outside or I’m doing some sort of activity wear it might slip off.

I have been known to wear my rings on an irregular basis. I wore them all the time when we first got married. I “lost” my diamond ring in the dryer after putting them in my jeans pocket one day when they were feeling too tight. Then I lost my band when I was pregnant with Jacob it took them off because my fingers were HUGE. I bought myself a replacement band on ebay a few years ago, and then my brother dug my diamond out about a year after that. But, by the time all that happened, I was totally out of the habit of wearing them, and my fingers were a little bigger than they used to be, so they were mildly uncomfortable. However, my good friend TAMMY (you know the one) STOLE MY RINGS recently and had the smaller one resized, and now I wear them ALMOST all the time! When I don’t, it’s just because I forgot to put them on when getting ready in the morning.

Now I bet you wish you hadn’t asked! :)

Though my wife and I wear rings, my wife’s father never did. He just “wasn’t a ring person”. Instead he had a engraved gold wrist watch he wore all the time. Now my wife wears the watch.

While I do wear mine unless I’m at the beach(already lost one there)my wife doesn’t wear her’s as something about it breaks out her skin, so she 3 more rings that work as the place holders, but definetely wouldn’t qualify as wedding rings.

We have a young man in our church who lost his finger when his wedding ring got caught on a shelf as he was falling. My father-in-law is a mechanic and doesn’t wear his out of fear of the same thing happening to him.

  13. Paul February 29, 2008 at 7:04 am #

I do not wear mine most of the time due to my work. I try to remember on off days, etc. to put it on.

Interesting question. Perhaps everyone should just get the tattoo of a ring? Hmm..maybe not…

But one other thing I have noticed, in my whopping 6 months of marriage (already?) is how easy it is to spot the newly married husband that DOES where a ring. They are always messing with it. Spinning it, taking it off then putting it back on, etc.

And yes I am guilty of that, praise Jesus!

I work in the food industry thus we can wear no jewerly on the production floor. Also, biking and golfing used to produce big calluses so I quit wearing it. I have been pondering a wedding ring tatoo.

I am not married, so I will tell you why my Daddy does not wear his ring. He worked in a plant where he would repair machines. He would not wear his ring his to work because his hands would get really dirty, and he was afraid he would damage it. My Mom started wearing his ring and she has not given it back to him.

My husband and I have only been married for 3 months, and the first thing I do every morning is put on my wedding rings. I know he worked hard and sacrificed a lot to give me the beautiful rings he did. Sometimes he gets in such a hurry in the mornings that he forgets to put on his ring, but he always call me to tell on himself. He will call and remind me he loves me and only wants to be married to me… who can be mad at that? :)

There is a large Coast Guard base here and many of the guys in our church who are military don’t wear rings because they work on planes/helos and have seen more than a few fingers ripped off as a result of rings getting caught on machinery/engines. Ouch.

I don’t wear mine, I guess I have a couple reason’s. First off, my parents do not wear theirs (not sure why, never asked). Secondly, I used to be a motivational speaker and now do leadership training for Dale Carnegie. My nervous/unconscious incompetent “twitch” is twirling my ring when I speak. I felt it distracted, so i just took it off. BTW I will put it on when we go out.

The first 10 years of marriage I was in concrete construction. I had to take it off to work and lost 3 of them. I refused to buy another. Now that I am in full time ministry, I bought a $50 titanium one. I think most of the other gold diamond ones look to flashy and are out dated.

Here in Latin America, its more like a Law, people will question you if you don’t.
I do were mine 98% of the time, when I don’t its because I forgot to, but I must call home to explain….

I got my wedding ring tattooed on my finger so the problem is solved – I don’t have to wear a ring and the message is clear. Had an interesting conversation with the tattoo artist when he said, ‘…this is permanent you know…’ I told him that wouldn’t be a problem at all, so was our marriage.

i wear mine tony but my wife doesn’t wear hers….wonder if she’s trying to tell me something?!?

Grew up in the steel erection business and rings of any kind just didn’t appear to be too safe. So have never liked wearing rings of any kind. For my wife and me who have been married 25 years it has never been a deal breaker. I think she actually wears a different ring in place of her wedding ring.

There are times (when I am skinnier than my marrying weight) that I am unable to keep my ring on my finger. Thankfully I can transfer it to my right hand, looking European.

I used to not where my ring all of the time because I worked with Gate Security systems, most of which have all of their electrical components in a little metal box. It took one time for my wedding ring to arc against an electrical conductor, my ring, and the metal box to learn that it was ok not to wear it while on the job, which was a majority of my day, sometimes I would not wear it for longer because you forget to put it back on.

I have heard horror stories from electricians who’s fingers were almost severed because of high voltage electricity arcing their ring, so just in case you do not have an electrician reading your blog, I’ll submit that answer for them =)

I wear one and glad to do so.

    So does my wife.

Do women even permit the removal of wedding rings these days? It’s a big deal to my wife for me to keep mine on whatever the circumstances. She brags about only removing hers twice in over seven years.

I would have to confess that I’m ringless at the moment – my wedding band never came off for the first 4 years we were married until I was pregnant with our son…then due to the extra weight, my finger got to the point where it ached and I realized it was time for it to come off for awhile. My diamond is a 1/2 size bigger, so at times I wear it by itself…I still haven’t lost back down to where I’d like to be, so from time to time I have both rings on, one ring on, no rings on…time to get on the ball and get the weight off so that I can be a 2 ring girl again. I LOVE wearing both rings and am sad when I don’t have one or both of them on, but am determined to lose the weight so don’t want to have them resized…

i am not allowed to wear my rings to work. :( i try to remember to put them back on when i’m off but sometimes i forget. i HATE it when i forget them b/c i feel it’s an honor to wear the rings my husband gave me.

Married at 165lbs. Now 210lbs. I have never taken it off. I can’t take it off!!!

Had a friend who was in maintenance. Company required he take his off. Didn’t. Got caught on a piece of equipment, pulled him in, he died an hour later. I think maintenance is a good excuse.
