After a couple of break out sessions and lunch, Perry came back for the final session of the day. He said he didn’t come to teach–he came to preach. Here’s what he preached…
- I think he just said, "deer booty."
- "When I became a senior pastor, nobody told me what I was about to face."
- Exodus 4:1
- "Moses. Led a church of one million. Led them through a relocation process. Greatest pastor ever."
- Deal with your pride and insecurities.
- "One of the most dangerous things God can give a leader or a church is success."
- First thing Moses had to deal with was insecurity.
- "I’m probably the most insecure person in the room."
- "If you’re not offending someone, I don’t think you’re preaching the Gospel."
- "The Word of God stopped the vomit." (That’s the punch line. You’ll have to make up the story.)
- "I think he’s putting on a few pounds. He went double-meat, double-cheese…I think." Referring to Subway Jared.
- "I made 790 on my SAT." Was that verbal or math? "No, that was it."
- "You are called. You didn’t volunteer."
- I Cor. 1:26-31 — Think of who you were when you were called.
- "Go back to where he called you, because he hasn’t changed his mind."
- Use your staff.
- Exodus 4:2
- "God gave Moses his staff." (Chuckle from the crowd.)
- T.D. Jakes… "God didn’t give Moses the staff for the staff to lean on Moses. God gave Moses the staff so Moses could lean on the staff."
- "Pay your staff well."
- "Well is what it would cost to replace them."
- "Treat your staff with respect."
- Staff members: "You’ve never felt the weight that your senior pastor feels. You’ve never fought the spiritual battles. You have no idea what it’s like to receive the criticism. Don’t tell me you know what he’s going through."
- "Senior pastor can never cut it off."
- Do you bring joy to your senior pastor?
- "I love the staff I serve with!"
- Take God-directed risks.
- "I didn’t say take stupid risks."
- "Golf is not a sport…and neither is NASCAR." (How do I respond?)
- "Don’t you ever talk yourself out of a potential staff member." Peter. Biggest catch ever. Laid down his nets to follow Jesus.
- Exodus 4:3-5
- Moses ran from it.
- "We may be running from an obvious movement of God. We’re playing it safe."
- "Kiss my tail…pastor." (You had to be there.)
- "We do not get to where God wants us to go by playing it safe."
- Sometimes God asks us to pick up the snake by the tail.
- Talked about "ministry, drained and danger zones." From the second message in the "Stuck" series.
- Understand at times it’s going to hurt.
- Exodus 4:6
- Sometimes you have to endure some pain to do what God has called you to do.
- Follow his leadership.
- Exodus 4:7

Really great conference New Spring. It was really practical and down to earth. I loved Perry’s humor and passion for the church. Next year I will bring my staff again and many more. It was good to see you too Tony. Great on-stage energy my friend. Sorry I missed Emily and the kids. Keep up the great work.

Tony,
You have a great blog with great insights. I know many people are benefited by what they read here, but I have one honest question: Do you think that the church in America is getting to a point where we are having too many church conferences? It just seems that when a church grows to a certain point, they always feel the need to launch a conference to share their two cents on how ministry is and isn’t, should or shouldn’t be done. It almost seems like church’s are now having conferences just for the sake of having them. I see the benefit in them on many levels, but do we need so many? I know that the motivations of launching conferences are generally good and pure, but would it be better at times to point people towards what already exists rather than creating a new take on a seemingly overdone idea? It really is just a question; you guys are doing great things.
