Buildings, Blogging, Birds and the Bees

Here is some randomness that’s been accumulating in the need-to-share-with-my-blog-reading-friends file:

  • Check out the pictures of the construction of the new student life facility. We’re hoping to have this building open by the fall.
  • In case you missed it, Kem shared some great insights on organizing the promotions process. If you are a communications leader at your church, you need to check out this post.
  • The kids at Fellowship Church have started blogging again. Ed Young has jumped in. So has Pace Hartfield, Fellowship’s worship pastor.
  • If my phone could sync with Google calendar and contacts, I’d tell the boys in IT to switch me from Outlook to Google. And, I’m jealous that Los has already switched.
  • The "birds and the bees" is one thing, when is it appropriate to talk to your kids about blogging?
  • The most recent Catalyst podcast is with Seth Godin. Speaking of Catalyst, inside sources have shared specific speaker names for Catalyst 2008. I think we’re in for a fun conference.

Finally, I’d like to personally thank Mike from New Hope Church in Charlottesville, Virginia for making it possible for me to go to the ACC basketball tournament with Jacob last weekend. Let me tell you something amazing about New Hope. They realized that their older building was a barrier to reaching unchurched people in their community. So, they recently sold their building (it was completely paid for) and started meeting in an elementary school last weekend. They’ve gone completely portable.

Stories like that pump me up. I love it when churches step out of their comfort zone to bring Jesus to their communities. Pray for Mike and New Hope as they launch into this new adventure.

UPDATE: Mike had this to share about their first weekend at their new location: "Going portable was incredible.  In our first service we had a first-time guest give her life to Christ, the band sounds 10 times better,
and the excitement level is much higher than I had expected."

They sold their paid-for building to go portable on purpose? That’s hard core.

This’ll get you through the calendar sync at least…

It was released recently by Google and I’ve been using it for syncing up my work calendar and family calendar. You can set it up to sync up, down, or both…works great for me.

You don’t necessarily even need to sync. Google calendar has a feature that emails your scheduled to you daily. It will also send you reminders before your meetings. Of course all of this is set to your custom preferences.

I’ve used Google Calendar for quite some time and it’s not a problem. The biggest issue is adding appointments on the go from my cell phone (Blackberry), that’s a little cumbersome but it does work.

    Tony-

I blew off Outlook in favor of Thunderbird for my email, and Thunderbird’s calendar add-on, Lightening, for calendar. On a computer they work together similarly to Outlook. However, they won’t synch to my Blackberry, so I decided to go with Google Calendar.

It will synch to my Blackberry, it sends me SMS reminders of appointments, and my administrative assistant can access it to view and add events. I’d say give Google Calendar a closer look!
