Here are some of my favorites lines from Perry’s message this morning:
- “He didn’t need a lecture or more knowledge, he needed someone to pick him up.”
- “I don’t want to be a perfect church for perfect people.”
- “If you love the way we do church right now, you’re probably going to hate it in 10 years.”
- “We’re going to do anything short of sin to reach people for Jesus. It may make you uncomfortable, but you will hopefully be mature enough to handle that.”
- “I’m sick and tired of Las Vegas and Hollywood outdoing the church.”
- “We’re never supposed to be safe, because God created us to be dangerous.”
- “Come in the house. Let’s connect with what the Father is doing.”
- “I don’t think all Christians are Republicans.”
- “We’re trying to save the planet while the people on it are dying and going to Hell.”
- “We’re going to celebrate who Jesus is and what he is doing.”
What Leadership Demands - From Backstage

[...] Today was one of the most challenging messages Perry has ever preached. He used the story of the Prodigal Son but focused his talk on the other brother (Luke 15:25-32). This is a message that every believer, every church member and every church leader needs to hear. You can see Perry’s thoughts about today here. Tony also has some of the message highlights here. Hey Tony -
Love the blurbs from Perry’s message. There are two that are curious to me and would love to hear your feedback.
*”I’m sick and tired of Vegas and Hollywood outdoing the church”
-Help me with context and what exactly Perry was referring to that we should be “outdoing”. I believe he is definitely onto something but unsure of if I am onboard with our motivation being to outdo two icons of the world’s system. BTW - this is from a guy doing ministry in Vegas.
*”save the planet while people on it are dying and going to hell”
-Is Perry pushing back on the renewed emphasis within the church to be part of the “green” movement? I’ve been pondering it.

The “green” push of the American Church recently has made me nauseous. Give me a break. Perry is right-on with this point.

Tony, thank you for posting the Perryisms, I have used them to share with and disciple my leaders.

These comments made me push back more than want to listen to sermon for myself. I am tired of us looking to the world for our cues and culture for our redemption. Are we the ones called to redeem things? I would agree the recent push for being green has been very popular, but could that also mean that people are begining that we were given stewardship of this world? If I read Gensis correctly, we have a responsibility but we aren’t supposed to just rape and pillage for our own glory. Why not take care of the planet and this maybe a bigger message to the world than a million sermons and church services.

Craig, I’m right with you on the green thing. I’m 24, and I see the emphasis on green as a way to reach out to my peers. I truly believe that God has called us to take care of this earth, and if I were not a Jesus-follower but saw a church using all recycled paper and trying to reduce their carbon footprint, and then they said “We are green too, but we are green for a different reason than saving money or because it’s popular”, I would want to know why they thought it was important.
This is why I think one of my biggest impacts in the year and a half I’ve been at this church is reducing bulletin costs by 90%, even while switching to 100% recycled paper for the main part and at least 30% for any other parts of it.
Side note–The church I am actually a part of is a house church, and we don’t use paper, especially not printing something each week. Instead we use a projector, or a laptop connected to a TV, as well as a free website/blog format and email to communicate. We also did a special teaching on Earth Day, with Scripture, tips, songs all tied together.
