Get Your Strategy On
Here are more answers to questions you submitted several weeks ago.
1. How did you go from just a church member to getting into full-time ministry?
The short answer is that Tim invited me to be a part of his small group, and I finally convinced him after a few months that he should hire me. The long answer involves a journey that started when I accepted Christ. God was preparing me for years to be in ministry at a local church. I just didn’t know it would be Granger and I didn’t know it would happen so early in my career. I thought I was going to transition into ministry at the end of my city management career. God’s timing was different.
2. What passion drives or focuses your blogging?
I have a passion to encourage and challenge other church leaders. Hopefully that comes through in my blogging. (Oh, and my wife also thinks it’s sexy.)
3. With all your travels to different church facilities during your multi-site tour, was there any consistent theme to cool church design?
The one consistent theme with multi-site is that there is no consistent theme. It’s not a magic formula. Every church looks different. The way Seacoast, Community Christian, Fellowship, LifeChurch.tv and North Point all look different as examples. And, I can assure you, NewSpring will have its own unique flavor.
4. Were you ever a bad boy like Perry?
Well, I’ll be honest. I’ve never punched anyone in the throat. Actually, God saved me from me. I was a rule-follower. I created and tried to follow my own moral code. On the surface, I was a good kid, but it was pretty prideful to think I could earn God’s love. I accepted Christ while I was in high school. Finally recognized that Jesus paid the price for my sin…including my pride. Changed my life forever. “He must become greater; I must become less” (John 3:30). God is still in the process of working on me, but I’m forgiven and I’m loved and I’m saved. That’s a good place to be.

That’s reassuring to see your answer to #3, about church designs. In a group that works with a lot of medium-sized churches, I often hear, ‘make us more like Big Church X or Megachurch Y.’ It’s great to emphasize the point that every church needs to reflect its own community, not a foreign idea of success. Thanks!

Tony, Thanks for blogging. Your blog is very encouraging. I am a lay leader hoping to someday be in the ministry and I find the topics you cover “spot on.” By the way… I am going to have to start a blog. Hopefully my wife responds the same way.
