Today, Perry addressed the question: “Is it OK for Christians to drink alcohol?” His answer may surprise you, and it will probably make a lot of you mad. I recommend you watch the entire message when it’s available on www.NewSpring.cc later this week. Here are some of the lines from his message that grabbed my attention:

  • “Why don’t we ever vote at NewSpring? You’re about to see why.”
  • “Everyone will be offended at some point in this message. I got offended this morning, and I was the one preaching.”
  • “I’m not fighting anyone on this.”
  • “Beer tastes like what it looks like in my opinion.”
  • “The Bible teaches that alcohol in moderation is OK, but getting drunk is a sin.”
  • “When the Bible says ‘wine,’ it means ‘wine.’”
  • “Do whatever Jesus tells you. You can’t go wrong following that advice.”
  • Jesus turned water into wine. Jesus drank wine. “If you think Jesus was wrong, who are you going to send to spank Jesus?”
  • “I’ve seen it in my own life–alcohol has the potential to control people and destroy lives.”
  • “Does it control you? Could you walk away from it for a month if God asked you to?”
  • 100,000 people die each year from alcohol-related deaths. 300,000 deaths each year are associated with obesity. “The church refuses to address obesity. You know why? I do. I’ve seen most of their pastors.”
  • “Before you fire off an email message to me telling me why my position on alcohol is wrong, make sure you can see your toes.”
  • “Honor your father and mother. You don’t have to live their convictions, but you do have to honor your parents.”
  • “I don’t drink decaf. I don’t shop for my underwear at Victoria’s Secret. I don’t own a sweater vest. And, I don’t listen to Clay Aiken.”
  • “I don’t drink. But, I don’t think I’m more righteous than those who do.”
