Today, Perry addressed the question: “Is it OK for Christians to drink alcohol?” His answer may surprise you, and it will probably make a lot of you mad. I recommend you watch the entire message when it’s available on www.NewSpring.cc later this week. Here are some of the lines from his message that grabbed my attention:
- “Why don’t we ever vote at NewSpring? You’re about to see why.”
- “Everyone will be offended at some point in this message. I got offended this morning, and I was the one preaching.”
- “I’m not fighting anyone on this.”
- “Beer tastes like what it looks like in my opinion.”
- “The Bible teaches that alcohol in moderation is OK, but getting drunk is a sin.”
- “When the Bible says ‘wine,’ it means ‘wine.’”
- “Do whatever Jesus tells you. You can’t go wrong following that advice.”
- Jesus turned water into wine. Jesus drank wine. “If you think Jesus was wrong, who are you going to send to spank Jesus?”
- “I’ve seen it in my own life–alcohol has the potential to control people and destroy lives.”
- “Does it control you? Could you walk away from it for a month if God asked you to?”
- 100,000 people die each year from alcohol-related deaths. 300,000 deaths each year are associated with obesity. “The church refuses to address obesity. You know why? I do. I’ve seen most of their pastors.”
- “Before you fire off an email message to me telling me why my position on alcohol is wrong, make sure you can see your toes.”
- “Honor your father and mother. You don’t have to live their convictions, but you do have to honor your parents.”
- “I don’t drink decaf. I don’t shop for my underwear at Victoria’s Secret. I don’t own a sweater vest. And, I don’t listen to Clay Aiken.”
- “I don’t drink. But, I don’t think I’m more righteous than those who do.”

As I am reading these dying laughing (especially at the one that says before you email me make sure you can see your toes) my wife is saying, “that’s so mean!” But she is laughing too! We were talking about some of these double standards the other day, that’s why my wife loves Perry’s preaching, he says things she thinks but would never say to someone! :)

It is refreshing to hear an intellectually honest message on this topic. I was legalistic on this issue for most of my life until I looked at it honestly and realized that I was not applying the same standard to other proclivities (like gluttony, etc.) I think any church that condemns casual drinking is actually doing itself a disservice as it makes me question its intellectual honestly on other issues.

Man, what a series this has been! All the questions I’ve been scared to ask are being answered. It’s great to hear sermons on controversial issues where the stance taken is 100% Biblically based.
