Pastor P. Appreciation

Last week while I was in Nashville talking with the folks at LifeWay about my upcoming book release, the staff team at NewSpring was gathering for our regular all-staff meeting. Normally when the staff meets, we take time at the beginning of the meeting to introduce new folks, share stories about life change within the ministry and then Perry teaches something specifically for the staff team.

Last week, the tables were turned. The staff hijacked the meeting. Instead of sharing stories of life change, they took about 90 minutes to share how much our team appreciates Perry and his leadership. I hate that I missed it. But, since I did, I wanted to take a moment to share what I would have shared that day.

I’ve known Perry for several years and I’ve had the opportunity to work with him now for about 20 months. Here’s some of what I really appreciate about him:

  • He’s genuine. What you see on the platform or read on his blog is who Perry is in real life.
  • He’s a friend first and a boss second. It makes it easier to experience both the joy and challenges of ministry when you’re friends with those you serve.
  • He’s passionately pursuing his next steps toward Christ. I never have to second-guess the vision for NewSpring, because I know Perry is committed to listening to and following the voice of God.
  • He loves his wife and daughter. They are his priority. It’s not the church. That’s huge for those of us who are trying to do the same with our families.
  • He boldly holds us to the vision and values that define NewSpring. It’s a lot easier to lead when you have a clearly defined vision to follow.
  • He encourages us to share what’s on our hearts and minds. Perry’s secure in his leadership, and he’s not threatened by someone who has a different opinion. He doesn’t necessarily always agree with that opinion, but he’s always open to hearing it.
  • He’s constantly learning. I love it that Perry doesn’t give any indication that he thinks he has “arrived.” He’s always gaining new insights from his reading and his peers.
  • He fully grasps the responsibility he has to teach God’s Word. I’m quite certain there are few people who invest as much time, energy, prayer, study and conversation into their messages. There’s a reason why I’ve never heard Perry preach a poor message. He takes his calling seriously.

I could go on. The point is I realize that I’m lucky (“blessed”) to be where I am at NewSpring. God is certainly doing something amazing. I don’t deserve to be a part of it, but I’m grateful.

For other leaders reading this post, I hope you find it both encouraging and challenging. I know that working side-by-side with Perry certainly challenges me to be a better leader.

Perry, thank you for giving me this opportunity. It’s a huge privelege to serve beside you at NewSpring.

I too only know Perry through the internet, but I can surely say that his life and ministry has impacted me in a major way. One of the things that strikes me about his leadership is how those that serve under him talk about him. I only hope that one day, that my own leadership can make that kind of impact on those serving along side me. Thank you Perry for sharing your life and ministry with all of us. And thank you Tony for this blog. I really learn a lot from you and your writings here. Please know that you are appreciated immensely. God Bless YOU!
