My dad left at an early age as well. I was never taught how to be a man in respect to women, unless you count the U.S. Army. It wasn’t until meeting Jesus and becoming involved in church that I had any mentoring at all.

But masculinity isn't something one decides on their own to "grow." According to John Eldredge, "masculinity bestows masculinity." The problem is that most of us were raised by fathers who didn't have a pair who were raised by fathers who didn't have a pair either. They did the best they could but couldn't teach us what they didn't have. Most of us don't discover that we are missing something until after a traumatic event(s) shows us.
