Perryisms

Today, Perry shared the final message in our “No Perfect People Allowed” series. Among other things, we celebrated the Lord’s Supper together. Here were some of the lines from Perry’s message that caught my attention:

  • “Are you willing to do whatever it takes to take one step closer to Jesus?”
  • “We don’t like that ‘love others’ part because we can measure that.”
  • “God said if you want to take one step closer to him, you have to love the one you hate.”
  • “I went on a diet…once.”
  • “There is no way you can be a follower of Christ and have hatred in your heart toward another person.”
  • “Jesus pursued us to make things right.”
  • “Jesus didn’t die on the cross so we could be comfortable.”
  • “Freedom comes from immediate obedience.”
  • “If you email me, you automatically can become a sermon illustration at any time.”

In case you didn’t hear, we also launched our web campus this morning. We had 335 people attend our 11:15 service. That included people from 8 different countries. Next week the web campus begins it’s regular service schedule with services at 11:15 am and 6:00 pm EST.

I have read the book this series is refering too and also watched all of the available messages, but something is confussing. The series seems to have a very negative slant against Christianity or “traditional” churches, but the book doesn’t really make this its main emphasis. The book is more and more about helping people heal and come too a place they can give back, but I don’t see this in the series. When you guys do a series an use another title like this one, is it just for attention or do you feel a responsibility to stay true to the original content as to not taint the creator and his or her original intent?

freddy, i haven’t read that book. no, the series isn’t based on that book.

just out of curiosity, though, what gave you the impression that the series has a very negative slant against Christianity or traditional churches? i’d like to hear more about that.
