Questions

My life is really a series of questions that I’m constantly asking. Could be one of the reasons why I always prefer to interview than be interviewed. I like to ask questions. Here are some common ones I’m regularly asking:

1. What is God telling me to do? That’s usually confirmed through reading the Bible, praying and listening to the wisdom of the friends who surround me.

2. What is the wise thing to do? I learned this question from Andy Stanley. It comes from his book The Best Question Ever.

3. What does Emily think? You’d be amazed at how God uses your spouse to either confirm a good decision or stop a bonehead move.

4. Who? Because the most important thing I do in ministry is get the right people on the team. That includes both staff and volunteers. As I get older, this is also about identifying the new leaders.

5. What’s next? I’m 40 now. Maybe that urgency will subside as I age more. Or, maybe it will grow more intense. I don’t know. What I do know is that I’m one day closer to Heaven and I’d like as many people as possible to join me. Because of that, I’ve never been satisfied with the status quo. To me, this question is all about reaching more people for Jesus.

6. Why? This one probably annoys people the most, but churches in particular rarely ask it. We do things because we’ve always done it. Of course, churches are dying across the country. So, for at least this next season of life, that will probably create all kinds of new opportunities to ask why?

7. How can we simplify it? The tendency is to complicate. Over time, programs get added. In an attempt to avoid problems, we add guidelines. To help people move from point A to point B, we add steps. Usually, though, those steps just add confusion. This question is about removing barriers and making the next steps obvious.

There are seven questions to get you started. What are the other questions I should be asking? (I guess that’s number 8.)

Replay of Live Webcast on Worship

This afternoon, I had the opportunity to interview Shane Duffey and Lee McDerment on a live webcast. We talked about a number of topics related to worship and creative arts ministry. Both of these guys are very wise and very good at what they do. I think you’ll enjoy these two videos.

We had audio issues toward the conclusion of the first video. After those were fixed, we started the second video. If you are a worship leader, creative director or senior pastor, I think you’ll find the content extremely helpful.

By the way, Shane previously written about the NewSpring creative process here.

Tour the NewSpring Web Campus

NewSpring Web CampusToday was the official launch of the NewSpring Web Campus. If you weren’t able to join us, the site is open 24/7 now for your viewing pleasure. Go ahead. Take a peek. In case you’re curious, here are a few basics:

  • Each week we record the Sunday 9:15 am service from Anderson with cutaways to Nick, our web campus pastor, who hosts the services.
  • We upload the video to Light Cast Media so that it’s available to stream throughout the world. Today that included places like Brazil, Italy, Germany and Kentucky.
  • Our regular web campus service times are on Sundays at 11:15 am and 6:00 pm EST…at least for now.
  • There are a team of about 12 volunteers and 3 staff members on hand to support each service and to participate in the conversation and online prayer. You can check out the various volunteer team roles by clicking the “get involved” graphic on the web campus.
  • While the services are happening, there is a chat room that launches for participants to engage conversation and to ask questions. If the chat room distracts you, you can shut it off. You can also take the video full screen. I connected to my television recently so my whole family could experience the service together.
  • People who connect on the web campus may take next steps into group and serving opportunities. We’ll also have a membership experience available in the coming weeks to learn more about NewSpring and the opportunities available to engage with other people through the web campus.
  • Just like our physical locations, we’re expecting most people will experience a web campus service because a friend invites them. That’s why we’ve made it so easy to invite others to check out the web campus using email, Facebook and Twitter.
  • We have several enhancements to make. You are only seeing the foundation. We have more tricks up our sleeve that we hope to reveal in the coming weeks. (Know any cool developers?)

I know you may have additional questions, so I’ve arranged a live webcast with Nick and Joshua (the brains behind it all). We’ll go behind the scenes and dive into the details on Monday, February 9 at 2:00 pm EST. Watch my blog for more details.

In the mean time, I hope you’ll visit the web campus and invite your friends. I’ll see you there next Sunday.

Perryisms

Today, Perry shared the final message in our “No Perfect People Allowed” series. Among other things, we celebrated the Lord’s Supper together. Here were some of the lines from Perry’s message that caught my attention:

  • “Are you willing to do whatever it takes to take one step closer to Jesus?”
  • “We don’t like that ‘love others’ part because we can measure that.”
  • “God said if you want to take one step closer to him, you have to love the one you hate.”
  • “I went on a diet…once.”
  • “There is no way you can be a follower of Christ and have hatred in your heart toward another person.”
  • “Jesus pursued us to make things right.”
  • “Jesus didn’t die on the cross so we could be comfortable.”
  • “Freedom comes from immediate obedience.”
  • “If you email me, you automatically can become a sermon illustration at any time.”

In case you didn’t hear, we also launched our web campus this morning. We had 335 people attend our 11:15 service. That included people from 8 different countries. Next week the web campus begins it’s regular service schedule with services at 11:15 am and 6:00 pm EST.

Free Live Webcast Tomorrow

By popular demand, I will be interviewing Lee McDerment and Shane Duffey tomorrow afternoon (Monday, February 2) on a live webcast. Lee is the worship leader at our Anderson Campus and was one of the first folks Perry hired back in the early days. Shane is our Pastor of Creative Arts (I think that’s his title) and oversees the arts portions of our services at all our campuses.

You’ll have the opportunity to participate and ask questions during the webcast. It’ll be live. And, as always, it’ll be FREE.

Here are the details:

Feel free to start asking questions by leaving comments on this post. I’ll use your questions to launch the conversation.

Hope to see you in the chat room tomorrow. Tell all your friends. We’re expecting a crowd.
