Blackberry vs. iPhone

Three things I can do on my Blackberry that you can’t do on your iPhone:

1. Tether to my laptop for Internet access

2. Use Google Voice

3. Make phone calls

You have a fancy phone, but you’re stuck with the AT&T network.

Fortunately, I’m not cool enough to own an iPhone…

Actually, my roommate can tether w/ his iphone, don’t know how he does it.

I’d love to see the opposite list. I’m trying to decide whether to buy the iphone or not.

    amen.

    i miss my trackball………
    :(

but i love shooting/editing video and uploading to youtube with a click of a button!
and i love the camera filter apps (and other location-based apps too!!!)

oh, but another thing i miss about my bb curve…
    it does email right.
    the iphone SUCKS for email.

I used to love BlackBerry UNTIL I got an iPhone. I can make calls on my iPhone. Unlike your BlackBerry, I can actually access and surf the internet on my iPhone. BlackBerry? Been there, done that, upgraded :)

    I could not agree more!

Which BlackBerry device do you recommend? I am looking at the Tour or Curve. I’ve been using a Windows Mobile that has finally bit the dust and in the process of going to a BlackBerry.

  8. Frankie July 28, 2009 at 6:00 pm #

I can tether with my iphone and its not jailbroken.

I can make calls. Usually :)

    never tries google voice.

  9. Daniel D July 28, 2009 at 6:01 pm #

I’m posting this comment from my BB Curve. I love it and agree with all above.

  10. Peter Bishop July 28, 2009 at 6:12 pm #

Both are great devices. I have an iphone and I have google voice. Works great on it. What apple did is not cool, but GV works on my iphone none the less. Tethering can be done albiet a bit of a pain.

  11. Joe Case July 28, 2009 at 6:13 pm #

Ahhh, but…tethering does work with iPhone (though it’s not official yet. I’ve been doing it on mine!

  12. Caleb Rowden July 28, 2009 at 6:43 pm #

The opposite list of things I can do on my iPhone that you can’t do on your Blackberry would be about 20 times the length of this list. Sorry man – there is no comparison. Apple’s technology and people’s willingness to run with the stuff they put out there is unsurpassed. If you are a creative professional who wants access to unlimited features right at your fingertips, get an iPhone.

PS – I use my iPhone for Internet [and it is not jailbroken] and it is the best I have found for mobile email also!

  13. Graham July 28, 2009 at 6:43 pm #

Tethering may “work” on the iPhone… but I think the point here is that you’re still stuck with the horrible AT&T network. BB FTW!

  14. @branford July 28, 2009 at 6:54 pm #

if u’ve been on this blog before, u probably know that Tony is (kind of) an Apple guy.
Obviously, everybody already knows that the iphone ROCKS. but Tony ain’t lying, the BB has some pluses. sometimes i miss it.

and those that are using GV on iphone. really? are you sure?
it was never approved by Apple (techcrunch said today that AT&T nixed it actually).
are you thinking about Google Search app which has voice search in it?
Not the same thing that Tony is referring to.

  15. Ron Bacorn July 28, 2009 at 6:56 pm #

I thought the same thing until I got my iPhone. I loved the trackball (after all, it was better than that stupid wheel) Now, I tried to use somebody’s blackberry the other day and practically threw it through the window because of that stupid trackball. I can tether mine. But, my webrowser is so much better than my 8800, I hardly ever find the desire to tether a laptop. My At&T service is far superior to the T-Mobile, VZW, Alltel, and Sprint that I have had in the last 8 or 9 years. Thought I would never leave Blackberry. I was wrong. Glad I made the choice. I do miss being able to set p different ringer profiles though.

  16. Rand Duren July 28, 2009 at 6:57 pm #

Glad you like your Blackberry. I love my iPhone, have no problem making calls and I really don’t get why people hate AT&T so much, I have no problems with it… at all.

  17. @branford July 28, 2009 at 7:10 pm #

Rand, it totally depends on where you are. I’m in SF and AT&T is horrible here. Way too many people on iphones here. Even Edge is ridiculously bad.
But even with the frustration of horrible connectivity – i STILL love my 3GS!

  18. @tpkirkpatrick July 28, 2009 at 7:59 pm #

How is tethering not official? The biggest mistake iPhone made is the deal with AT&T. I just moved to Australia 4 months ago from the States. Here the iPhones:

    - have 4-5 different networks you can choose from
    - tether for free (depending on your network)
    - you can choose the prepaid option
    - don’t need Google Voice

    Blackberry’s:

    - Are trying to hold on for a foothold
    - the new Tour is an updated Curve and fairly simple (no wi-fi)
    - Blackberry’s just aren’t as sleek and sexy.

  19. David July 28, 2009 at 11:26 pm #

I’ve been tethering on my iPhone for a while now. just don’t tell AT&T.

  20. Kelly July 29, 2009 at 12:58 am #

Jailbroken, you can do 1 & 2 (new GV Movile app in Cydia). If you don’t have service, though, you can’t do 3.

  21. Cindy July 29, 2009 at 1:52 am #

I’m enjoying my iPhone so far. Had a BB something or other but w/out the data pkg. so I can’t really compare. I love the internet access and all that. I probably don’t utilize but about 10 percent of what the thing can actually do, but I’m having fun with it.

We’ve been w/ AT&T since it was Cingular or maybe even before that (16 years or so) and had mostly good service. I do agree that location has much to do w/ that. We were in the panhandle of FL and now in the ATL area. Can’t complain (right now at least).

  22. Michael July 29, 2009 at 7:26 am #

i have a non-jail broken iphone, and set up tethering quite easily. works great.

and google voice is no problem.

but the ATT part is straight up truth.

  23. Fred McKinnon July 29, 2009 at 8:20 am #

AT&T and lack of support for MMS is the only reason we haven’t made the switch

  24. Jason Petermann July 29, 2009 at 9:07 am #

Ahh Fred, but that is coming as well. Someone, somewhere just needs to flip the switch. (Actually, if you jailbreak you can get MMS now)

  25. Lance (tony's fav person) Martin July 29, 2009 at 9:21 am #

my google app has voice command. You can tether an iphone but you lose the warranty. Oh, the apple care plan is sweet! Got a new iphone after a year (without paying insurance) because of a minor problem (i dropped it, several times). I can also make phone calls it’s real easy! I think most people who have a BB are just jealous. Did I mention the static tech. touch screen that NO ONE else has?

Tony I’m pretty sure you own a Mac so you are cool enough for an iphone!

  26. Brad July 29, 2009 at 9:31 am #

I have voice activated Google search on my iPhone.

And as for the list of things iPhones can do… Just check out the 50,000+ apps! :)

You are cool – even without an iPhone.

  27. brad cooper July 29, 2009 at 9:39 am #

    hahahahahahaha….. i love it….

  28. Dave Anderson July 29, 2009 at 11:29 am #

    iHate blackberry
    iLove iPhone

    That being said

You can tether an iPhone but technically it violates a terms of service agreement. AT&T is the hold up for some reason – not Apple. It works.

Rumor is AT&T is why they pulled the google voice – not apple. Looking in to this. Not happy about it.

AT&T – More bars in less place!

AT&T is frustrating – but iPhone is superior technology in every way. Sometimes its like a Ferrari on a dirt road though.

  29. Dave Anderson July 29, 2009 at 11:35 am #

Here’s the link blaming at&t for the google voice fiasco:

  30. Kyle L Reed July 29, 2009 at 11:56 am #

Anyone who says they hate the iPhone or that a blackberry is better than an iPhone is really just upset they don’t have an iPhone, so they have to make the blackberry cool in some way.
It was like when the iPod and Zune came out. People tried to convince themselves that it was better than an iPod because it could play videos. Needless to say, those people don’t have a zune anymore, instead they are rocking the iPod.
    To each his own though.

Couldn’t make calls from my house with my BB on Verizon. Have yet to lose a call with my iPhone and AT&T. Overall, yes, AT&T’s network *is* sub-par and I liked the quality of Verizon’s service the best. But it was extremely frustrating not to be able to use my phone in the house.

    Let’s see, your 4 gripes:

    1. Tether: iPhone supports it, AT&T doesn’t FAIL
    2. Google Voice: all accounts are AT&T forced this issue FAIL
    3. Make phone calls: are you serious? FAIL
put us AT&T: well, you got me there.

Sounds like your gripe is with AT&T, not the iPhone.

The biggest reason I like the iPhone better is the apps. There’s roughly 2,000 apps available for BB, over 50,000 for iPhone. Most any developer will tell you the iPhone platform is superior to any other mobile platform. And, for me anyway, there’s far more useful stuff for the iPhone.

    Some:
decibel: SPL meter -incredibly accurate and invaluable (I run sound at my church)
remote: run itunes remotely – very useful for church and home
guitar toolkit: also play guitar at my church, very useful
    omni focus: mac/iphone only
TouchTerm: there’s likely ssh clients for BB now, but there wasn’t anything like this when I had one

  32. Jami Ruth July 29, 2009 at 8:25 pm #

Interesting. The iphone has changed my life. I love it.

But I actually really like AT&T service here in Indiana. I tried everything and never could get service where I lived…I have full bars with AT&T at my house. I love their text messages letting me know if there is a new tower or if one is down.

I don’t have to argue every charge w/ them like I did Verizon. Verizon was sooo bad they make AT&T look good.

And my phone has the cute apple logo. ;)

God made a few perfect people and the rest have iphones…
    love me some
    UberTwitter
    Pandora
    Pyont
    i have the BB Storm

  34. Anders Jacobsen July 30, 2009 at 6:58 am #

Luckily there’s no such thing as AT&T in Denmark ;) I have great 3G coverage with a data speeds of about 2.5 MBps

  35. Aaron July 30, 2009 at 7:22 am #

As a long-time BB user, I must admit that I miss the jog dial.

iPhones are nice, but the battery life blows. Who wants a “phone” you have to charge twice a day to get “average” use out of? If they’d improve that AND open it to other carriers, they might actually get somewhere.

    P.S.
Bragging about the iPhone having 50,000 apps is a bit pointless. The majority of those are redundant or contain little value. I’d rather have the most powerful email platform (AND ENCRYPTION) on my phone instead.

  36. Ryan Hukill July 30, 2009 at 1:33 pm #

Funny thing… not a single one of the three things you listed here is true. I use google voice and it works great. I tether my iPhone and it works great too. I make more phone calls than the average Joe, being that I’m a Realtor, and have no problems with that either. I’m STILL waiting on one person to give me any reason that a BB is better than an iPhone. Nice try though :)

Hey Guys. Judge for yourself… from the experts! Check it out…

    http://www.infoworld.com/d/mobilize/deathmatch-rematch-blackberry-versus-iphone-30-843

Judge for yourself. (Keep in mind, as is obvious from this post and the comments, your enjoyment of the iPhone features may vary depending on where you live. Apparently in Canada where I am, that’s not a problem. ; )

for those of you who think you’re using google voice with iPhone, you’re not. this article explains what you’re missing:

Apple closing the door on google voice almost made me jailbreak my iPhone…again. I wouldn’t trade my iPhone for a Blackberry, but Apple needs to loosen the reigns a bit on this thing. What if Google responded with, “well we’ll just pull the maps, youtube and other Google apps from the app store” ? It could get interesting. Somebody, somewhere will figure out a way to circumvent it I’m sure. They’ve already done it on the jailbreak version. I hope they fix that soon.

And I’ve been with AT&T from the beginning, but I think that when iPhones are available to more cell networks we’ll see a shift in their stranglehold on some of these apps. (keeping my fingers crossed)

  40. ScottyMac April 11, 2010 at 3:04 am #

Where I live you can only get unlimited data plans for Blackberry. I know that’s not the actual phone, but why get an iPhone if it costs more to use it?

Blackberry users can resist bragging to their friends and coworkers about how great their phone is. You bought a phone. Unless you invented it, don’t brag about how great you are because you have one.
