Get Your Strategy On
Patrick Lencioni launched the afternoon session. He opened by asking why do groups fail? He suggested there are two reasons:
behavioral problems — These are interpersonal conflicts. (See Five Dysfunctions of a Team.)
structural problems — These are typically silos. In the church, it’s when people are more focused on their ministry area than the overall mission [...]
In this session, they rolled a video tape of an interview that Hybels did with Bono a couple of weeks ago in Ireland.
Of all that has happened to Bono in the last year, he suggested that waking up with a melody in his head is the greatest gift. The other reason he gets out of [...]
Bill Hybels jumped right into another interview with Jim Collins, author of Built to Last and Good to Great. The first thing Hybels did was recommend every one purchase the new monograph Collins has recently released by a social sector. I reviewed it here on this site last December.
Collins said social sector organizations should not [...]
The second day launched with Bill Hybels interviewing Ashish Nanda, an associate professor of business administration at Harvard Business School. Nanda uses a case study about Willow Creek Community Church each year.
He talked about the risky business of hiring peak performers from outside your organization. Nanda did his research on stock analysts. His research showed:

Peg Neuhauser, president of PCN Associates, concluded day one of the Leadership Summit with a session on tribal warfare. She described “tribes” as the subcultures in an organization including a church. Each of these groups has it’s own priorities, opinions and needs for resources. There are all types of potential for conflict between tribes.
Examples of [...]

The Kingdom is compared in the parables to planting and growing. [...]
We’re participating in the Leadership Summit the next few days. I’m attending at the satellite location right here at Granger Community Church. The Summit has been my favorite leadership training through the years. I’m looking forward to learning and being challenged over the next few days.
Bill Hybels opened the first session by talking about the [...]
What does leadership look like in the emergent generation? In case you missed it, the Leadership Journal tackled that topic in an article by Angie Ward in their Spring 2006 issue. If you look closely, I’m quoted in the article that’s now available online.
Perry had some great insights yesterday on creating a leadership environment:
Do not put people on your team who are just like you.
Hire “Yes Men.” (you’ll have to read Perry’s explanation)
Encourage conflict.
LISTEN to those closest to you.
He can’t sing, but he sure does know a lot about leadership.
